Is it just me, or is it just plain stupid to broadcast ships movement to the world in anticipation of the NK’s intent to launch this “satellite”???
I have “some” experience in this, and that I still believe we have a very bright and stellar Navy and its crews are top notch...But they are sailing into a bad situation, and one that hopefully has been prepared for and supported by some "unknown" assets...But I have my doubts...
But if I were on those ships, and I knew our government thought it was a good idea to diplomatically inform the world and the NK’s that these ships “might” shoot down that rocket...
I might be a little miffed...
If I were the bad guys (NK’s) I would send every sub I had to go out and sink those ships before the launch...Never mind the chance of success...
Seems to me that a few phone calls (uphill) to express my slight dissatisfaction in the publicity that this situation has been given out so freely to the media...
Somehow I believe I would be getting together (orders or not) to my sonar techs to be hyper-vigilant on their sensors to watch and listen for these gomers to pull this stunt...
But thats just how I roll...And any of the CO’s I served with would have appreciated the reminder, and blessed it...Regardless of the OpOrds!!!
And some people think I over-react...

I'm not an expert but it seems that anyone in can track the movements via satellite these days anyway, and that one actually believes the N. Koreans would actually attack a fleet of our ships. Years ago some stealth was necessary because satellites were less common place and we were concerned about near compatable technologies. I believe that the Koreans would be unlikely to have anything stealthy enough to sneak up on us.
Its a different world today.

Agreed. There are open source websites that publish the current locations of our carrier battle groups on a real time basis. With modern satellites, everything is pretty much open source these days. The military is not ignorant of that fact. What you see is not necessarily what you are seeing and since the press will report anything that fits their perception of the world, they are easily manipulated to print exactly what certain people want them to print.
Anything on the surface is common knowledge to darn near anyone. I would be interested to know how much "backup" is stealthily patrolling the waters around those ships underneath the surface just to see if the North Koreans have the gumption to try anything. The whole world thinks of us as stupid Americans, but we're not that stupid.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
I guess I have ranted enough about this because I know how hard it is to be discrete "on the surface"...
But the friends I have here who have been a part of the "Silent Service" know the score, and I have a high degree of confidence that they have my friends in the "Skimmer Navy" covered...
Lets watch what happens, and maybe more important, what doesn't happen...

Now the world media and the NK's know that the Japanese Navy has sortied their Aegis ABM ships (2 of them)...
Why does anyone believe in telegraphing ships movements help anything???
The NK’s ARE going to launch that rocket!
It IS going to fly over Japan...
Whether or not any booster debris falls on Japanese territory has yet to be seen...Shooting down a booster is certainly within their right because any residual fuel would be a hazard to the Japanese people in that area...
My problem is that broacasting ships movement puts all the crews at risk...Sure they are capable of defending themselves, but at last count there are 4 confirmed Aegis type ships going to an area off of NK to do “something”, or at least be ready to do something...2 of those ships are U.S. Navy...With great fanfare from an enthusiastic world media, making sure the bad guy know for sure they are out there...
I dunno, when I was in we knew where we were and what we were doing there, and there were general reports from the media that at the time, knew it was important to generalize reports of ship and troop movements to protect them and their mission...
A case in point that some may or may not remember, but Captain Rogers of the U.S.S. Vincennes found out the hard way about the effects of notoriety when a retaliatory attack on his wife IN SAN DIEGO, when a pipe bomb exploded under her vehicle after his ship defended themselves from a possible attack...I don’t want to get into semantics about the erroneous evaluation of that contact, because I do know what happened because of that...I was there...
Maybe I should just shut up and not say anything, but I just can’t for the life of me understand why someone tipping off, or encouraging the media, to cover this kind of stuff for political and or diplomatic reasons is a good thing...
I see this also being similarly prepped to becoming a Gulf of Tonkin incident...
I’m all for kicking some tail where and when it needs to be kicked, and this one is long overdue...But it might be better to be a surprise, look what we did, after the fact, than give a potential enemy time to attempt to counter our actions...
I like to make it as unfair to the enemy as possible, and fight dirty, that way we win with as minimal chance of casualties as possible on our side...
BTW, you know, there “may” be a good reason why their rockets are not doing very well in all of these “tests”...And earlier those tests you never heard about any ships movements into the area, and anything else of the sort, because people kept their mouths shut...
I find it rather ironic that in a new administration that we are just now making a big deal out of what these ships and other technologies we have on hand can do, and it may be common knowledge to some, like myself and others, but this type of publicity is detrimental to people operating them...
Its like the diplomats and politicians now want to level the playing field to give the enemy time to attempt to counter our efforts, however foolish or limited success rate that may be...
I mean sure, maybe I should not say anything about this at all...Its inflamatory...I just know and understand the ramifications of this new and transparent administration and its desire to destroy our credibility, and ability to defend ourselves and our interests around the world...Besides Pandora's box has been opened...I'm just trying to get folks to realize we really need to shut it down before lives (our people) are lost...All because there is a mentality that we need to stop being a "bully" to others...
This playground mentality in our politicians needs to grow up, because it is going to get people killed...And I would just rather that not be the result of this obvious agenda from a certain segment of our cadre of elected seat warmers...
Just my opinion...

I need to get out of here and to the range to vent some of my frustration...
The potential of this going against us has got me rather upset...And I do not feel like my usual calm, cool and collected self...
Yeah, right...

Im still trying to figure out why we even care if NK can shoot a rocket. We shot down a satellite the size of a school bus moving 22,000 mph. Im sure we can shoot down a giant slow moving rocket if it's a threat to us.

Like what? Is she going to do a table dance at their next national celebration?
