Non-Resident Permits ?

Post by Harvick »

I have a Flordia permit, it is a Non-Resident Permit. I live in the wonderful land of the anti-gunners (IL). I have done some research on a trip I am planning this summer. I am going from Chicago to North Carolina. I know my permit is valid in IN, KY, TN, but NC is the question. A few different sites state, any FL permit is valid in NC, and one says any permit from the residents state is valid (alas I am not a FL resident).

Can anyone clear this up for me?

BTW, in FL when you are stopped, you do not have to disclose you are carrying unless asked. I know some states, it is mandatory. Is there a general rule of thumb to follow? I do not want to create a non issue if pulled over, by declaring my weapon.

Thanks Forgive me if these questions have been answered elsewhere. This is my first post.

I don't know the answer to your question about North Carolina licensing, or where to find it. But as someone who was born in Chicago and grew up there, let me welcome you to the forum.

As for informing law enforcement, the various states are all over the map. Some require you to inform. Some do not.

Welcome to the forum Harvick. :tiphat:

Here is a good link to reference http://www.handgunlaw.us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The map on the main page shows you in yellow which states require your permit to be a 'resident' permit. There is also a lot of other good info on each state for this site.

Another good site is the Pack-N-Go trip planner http://www.carryconcealed.net/packngo/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. it will tell you about all the states you plane to travel to and if they honor your license.

That was one of those sites that was giving me conflicitng info. On the map, it said I was not good in NC, but on the trip planner it said I was ok in NC. Or vice versa, but that is why I was confused.

This is the map that says my non-resident FL license in not good in NC, but the trip planner does. Weird.

Looks like they have their map backwards between North and South Carolina. SC does not honor non-resident permits, but NC does. The handgunlaw.us map is correct. :thumbs2:
