Mom & I went to Moody Gardens in Galveston over the weekend. Step-Dad was concerned about us, but Mom reminded him that I have a CHL. His question was, "and I suppose she's going to conceal that in a swimsuit?"
Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know that we did not see a single 30.06 sign while in Galveston. We went to a few of the attractions at Moody Gardens, stayed in the Moody Gardens hotel, and went to several local restaurants.
In fact, the hotel at Moody Gardens even had a safe, and you set the combination. While we were at the hotel pool, I would lock my gun up in the safe, and keep it in there with the safe unlocked while we slept.
I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up. Moody Gardens and Galveston appear to be good for gun owners.

Good news. Been 4 yrs since we were there but never saw a 30-06 anywhere we were in G.

One of the many reasons I love living in Galveston County! There are several business owners that openly welcome CHL! I have yet to see a sign that spells this out.......but I am always looking for the first! Take care.

Don't remember where any business in particular but over the yrs I have seen a few. Alway on the lookout for 30-06 so I see the welcome signs too. 2-A Supported Here. Barnhills here has one w/ a handgun pictured & under it We Don't Call 911. Cleaners here in town has a NRA sticker on the front door. Told them one time they were the only cleaners I will use just to support them for the sign. Ask if the ever got any flack. Not yet.

Moody Gardens is one of the safest places in the state. Given that it's second only to the beach as the biggest tourist attraction in Galveston, very few crimes occur there, mostly theft from cars. They have security patrols in the parking lots and cameras everywhere. The bad guys seem to steer clear of it.

If you come to Galveston, be careful of the more more remote parts of the beach, crowds of kids, and the seedier bars. Also make sure that there are no theft targets visible in your car -- pretty much the same as any tourist locale.

Seamus, that is just the kind of thing that scares me.
Even if that woman were a CHL holder, how well would it have gone over if she would have had to use her gun on the officer?
I can tell you now, she would have been up a creek without a paddle.

I read somewhere a couple of years ago that more LEO's were convicted of felony's each year than CHL's. I wish I had kept that.

She most likely would have been convicted of capital murder unless she pled guilty to a life sentence.

There is a case to be made for women to stay in their cars and call 911 when they are stopped by police in an isolated place. If you do this, you almost certainly will be arrested; but it will bring too many police for really bad shenanigans to occur.

I guess this is a decision everyone has to make for themselves given the circumstances.

In 2001, 180 CHL holders in Texas were convicted of felonies. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... vrates.htm

I don't know for sure how many CHL holders there were at the time -- probably around 200,000.

BTW, these were not necessarily gun-related crimes. There was one murder and one charge of deadly conduct with a firearm.

I don't know what percentage of police officers are convicted of crimes. It happens often enough not to be big news.

This is not to tar all police with the same brush. The majority are dedicated people who do a difficult, dangerous job.

A little "correction" in order there. Note that not all of those 180 were felonies. Misdemeanor convictions perhaps that would poo-poo CHL eligibility, but not all felonies.

And compared to the general population, 180 convictions of CHL holders vs. over 35,000 for non-licensees indicates that we're a pretty well-behaved crew.

Yea, I recall that stat too about CHLers vs. LEOs. Gotta go to work just now and no time to research, buy hey, I just could not llet the little boo-boo above slide. Especially from one of our own!

They were mostly serious crimes, though, except for UCW (which I consider a technicality in most cases).

The only 30.06 signs I have seen in Galveston are at the Galveston Co. Sheriff Office in Galveston, and I believe UT Med Center. I have never seen one on the mainland.

Mrs. Anygun and I frequent the Galveston restaurants instead of driving North on I-45. Less crowded, better food, fewer packing issues.

No 30.06 signs and no searches. I just took my family and in laws to Galveston last week. No "no gun" signs and everywhere only peace and prosperity. I still carried at the hotel, the beach and the restaurants. By the way Guidos has excellent service and food. I did not like the $20 per entree dinners, but the Potato au Gratin was superb!

In case anyone is wondering how to carry at the beach, my advice is not to swim. I did wade up to my upper thighs in blue jean shorts, but remained out of the water for the most part. Both weapons carried were Keltecs the P11 and the P32. I will clean them again soon, but did not note any corrosion from the experience.
