Ordering from CMP?

Post by rkl56119 »

Anybody ordered from CMP before?

I am interested in purchasing a M1 Garand and have several questions.

1. CMP requires 4 elements before shipping.
a. US Citizen
b. Proof of Age
c. Proof of membership in a CMP affiliated program
d. Marksmanship or other related Activity

I am sure I meet the first 2 requirements. I am a member with PSC and I found PSC on CMP's list of affiliated programs so I think I'm okay there. On the 4th point I found that CMP accepts a concealed handgun license for that element. Since I do have a concealed handgun license I think I qualify for the last element.

Do I meet all of their qualifications? Can a CHL actually be used to meet the 4th element?

2. If I place an order I would prefer to pay with a credit card. Would CMP charge me as soon as they receive the order or before they ship?
I know the wait time for an order is at least 6 months.

Thanks for any assistance.

Yes, you apparently meet all of the requirements, Others should know that membership in the TSRA also satisfies the club affiliation.

Your credit card isn't charged until your order begins processing, but there may still be a short period before shipping.

You only have to jump through hoops on your initial application. It remains valid for three years, so on future applications, you can note that items are on file and you don't have to get them notarized.

I haven't been to their website or forum lately, so I can't tell you how far they are backlogged. An ammo order I placed in early December took about 3 months.

I bought Springfield and H&R M1s from them and a couple of the Mossberg M44US .22's.

Buy as much of the Greek ammo as you can, whenever they have it.

Their website says 3-6 months. I ordered a carbine in February and they charged my credit card two weeks ago, so I expect it any day now. :totap:

Copies of my passport, CHL and TSRA membership card were all the documentation they needed. (Plus the notarized dead trees.)

Can one still go to one of the CMP stores to avoid the wait and pick one up off the rack? It seems like I heard or read somewhere that this was possible and that you could borrow a gauge from them to measure available rifles to make the best choice. Sorry to highjack a bit, but I have been bitten by the M-1 bug very badly.

I always wanted to see Alabama.....

You can go to the stores (Alabama is best stocked) but right now the Garands are in short supply. All Service Grade Springfields are going to fill existing mail orders. There are very good M1 Carbines to pick from however. You might find a nice rack grade Garand but a trip to the store would not likely get you a nice service grade Springfield right now.

There are store reports every week in the CMP forums. I would keep an eye on the postings there http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/default.asp

You are likely looking at a 6+ month wait on any rifle ordered now. If you order a service grade Garand it will take longer. That does not mean you should not order. Demand is high. They aren't making any more WWII war relics are they?

One other option is you can buy in the CMP auctions but right now they are mainly M1 Carbines and not Garands.

Good luck! :patriot: :txflag:
