Question 'bout new S&W 357 Revolver

Well, I finally worked a deal with the wife where she didn't mind that I
go buy a pistol (I had to buy her a $1300 fancy sewing mach for her quilting...)

I'm trying to do the good husband thing and talk things over with
her before blowing a bunch of money which is fair I guess if
you're a female type person.

Anywho, I just bought a Smith & Wesson 357 Revolver and
it's in very good condition. The guy said he bought it from
an elderly man who bought it new in the early 70s and only
shot it a few times, as did he so he's saying it has less
than 50 rounds through it.

So, I'm documenting everything and when I was recording
the serial number for my records it brought up a question...

The serial number is: N2845** (last two digits truncated)
and right below the serial number is this: MOD 28-2

Anybody know what this means?

The model 28 Highway Patrol and its better finished brother, the model 27, were built using S&W's N-frame, or the large frame used for their .44 magnum.

It should provide generations of service.

OK, so basically what this means is that this is a large frame version?

Yes, it's a nice heavy gun...can't wait to get it to the range and
practice with it to get a good feel for how it handles.

Just got back from buying a couple of boxes of ammo and
I cleaned it really good, even though it looked like it was
pretty clean already.

Your serial number indicates a mfg date of 1974-1977.

The bible, so to speak, would be "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd Ed" by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. You might find it in a library. Only you can decide whether it's worth it to buy for only one S&W. Amazon.com may have the best price.

Does this book cover S&W from say early 1900 up to present day models?

If so, I might go ahead anf get it cause I think S&W is my handgun of choice.
They're still made in the US, right?

Yes, it covers everything.

You've caught a bug there's no vaccine for, only treatment.

The treatment involves vintage S&Ws. Repeat as needed.

I'll have to yield to someone more familiar with the M&P. Besides revolvers, my taste runs to 1911's and Hi-Powers.

I just never warmed up to S&W's many generations of semi-autos.

There have been discussions about the M&P here. Search should return some reading material.

If I were to venture into high capacity, polymer pistols, I would take a hard look at the Springfield XDm.

I have an N Framed .44, and it's a cannon. The N Frames are really well made pistols. I really like mine. And although the .357 cartridge is a real powerhouse, compared to the .44 mag in a pistol of that size, it ought to be a real sweet shooter. Enjoy it!

In exchange for a $1300 sewing machine you should get at least 2 if not 3 handguns!

The S&W M&P is an excellent gun. I shoot my wife's more than she does and I also have the 45 version.
