Jim Pruett's Guns and Ammo

Post by Jeremae »

I just completed the CHL class for initial application yesterday at Jim Pruetts Guns and Ammo in NW Houston (classroom on Huffmeister, shooting test at Hot Wells Range on 290) and although several people have commented on this class in another thread thought I would start a new one so title reflected name.

Day started promptly 8am at Hot Wells Range for the shooting test. Everything was run very safely with just enough humor injected to add some fun. Jim Pruett, for those of you not from Houston area, is a long time Radio personality and therefore a showman but on a very professional level. I find no fault at all with the procedures and instructions used. For fun, after everyone had qualified, Jim allowed anyone who wanted (in fact encouraged all the ladies) to fire a couple rounds out of a Century Arms AK-47. The one thing that amazed me was the gentleman who shot with a Keltec 380 who had only 2 or 3 rounds out of the zero down zone.

Actual class was held in strip center on Huffmeister where the store is located. Facilities were somewhat threadbare but comfortable (in particular, AC kept room cool). Class was taught by Jim's son Sam Pruett who is imho an effective public speaker and excellant teacher. He gave us a lot of pertinant information and handle questions and data/stories from several slightly over-informed individuals  smoothly without allowing the class to get bogged down in trivialities. His approach to the use of deadly force is very conservative, stressing that is MUST be a LAST resort and he encouraged everyone to seek out additional training and practice oppertunities like competative shooting such as IDPA. One thing I liked was that the paperwork was broken up and done across the whole class in small tasks instead of all at once. The police office who did the fingerprints was very good at his job and also contributed occasionally from his point of view as LEO to class.

After lunch, we walked over to the store and Jim displayed and allowed everyone to handle examples of guns, holsters, pepper spray etc. He, of course, talked primarily about what he acually sold but did NOT disparage any equipment even if he didn't carry it.

Everone involved had a clear understanding of the importance of RKBA and expressed themselves with enthusiasim that stressed responsibility.

I would HIGHLY recomend this class to anyone.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.
