Sight Install NW Houston?

Post by Carrots »

Does anyone know if either Gander Mt. or Carters will install night sights while you wait? Any other suggestions for an in-and-out shop in NW Houston?
I have a new arrival that I would like to shoot Sunday if possible, and whilst I know that it is not a hard job I am tool less. I have the sights and just need the service. Thank you :)

You might check with Shooter's Station in Conroe.

Thanks!

Gander Mt can do it, but I will need to leave it with them (eek)

Shooters station can do it whilst I wait, and I will be heading there over the weekend.

Appreciated :)

I had Shiloh Shooting Range install night sights on my glock. Wasn't "while I waited", but if you call ahead, they might take an appt and do it on the spot when you come in. Give 'em an call and see..

Edit: Oops - should of read the thread all the way thru - I now see shooters station will do it while you wait...

Well a mixed bag from Shooters Station. On the one hand they did fit the sights whilst I waited and they seem to have done a good job, but at $35 I did feel a little overcharged for 10 minutes work. Just as well I got an excellent deal on the sights themselves.

What annoyed me more was that I bought 150 rounds of 45 whilst I was there only to discover that all three boxes had two rounds missing when I arrived home. 6 rounds down isn't the end of the world, but at $33 per box for basic FMJ I sure would have preferred to get the full 50. Guess I should have checked them at the store.

They may be the 'friendliest gun store in all of Texas' but I won't be rushing back. 5/10

I hope you let them know about the missing rounds. Don't know if they will give you six but I do know they should be told. I am sure they don't want to sell short boxes and I am equally sure no one wants to buy them.

Carrots: Not addressing the missing ammo, but $35 does not sound out of line to me; you got the work done to your satisfaction, while you waited, which you could not find anyone else around to do. What did you expect to pay? I imagine most places have a minimum charge to do anything, and it sounds like that is what you paid. I guess the lesson to be learned is to ask ahead of time the charge. Well by not addressing the missing ammo you are not considering my experience in its entirety. If I had felt that the sights were high, but I had got what I paid for ammo wise then I wouldn't have spent to much time thinking about it. Likewise if the sights had been more in line with my expectations (and the costs that I hear others talk about when the subject comes up) then I would have been less concerned about the missing brass. The fact is that I felt overcharged for the sights and then I was shorted on my ammo - two deals, both of which that were not as I had expected and both of which that have obviously shaped my overall opinion. However I would not disagree that I should have asked their rate before showing up, and of course as I have said yes they did do it on my time and it does look OK.

This is not something that I shall be loosing any sleep over, but the whole thing just reminded me a lot of an experience that I had in a local boot shop. I was only there to browse, but happened to overhear a conversation between their onsite shoe shine man and a guy who had just got the treatment. Their transaction ended with a $10 charge and the guy left a $5 tip. That sounded reasonable to me and as I had some time to kill I thought why not. The same treatment cost me $30.

Both were cases of "Tourist" tax IMO, and both have left me happy to shop elsewhere. That might be unfair to SS, perhaps they do have a $35 minimum time-of-day charge, and perhaps that has been deemed to be acceptable by the shooting public in Conroe. Perhaps I was just very unlucky to have been handed three boxes of ammo that had been shorted. However as we all know "you only have one chance to make a good first impression" and as this was My money & My experience this is My opinion.

Call Jerry at Shooters and tell him about your missing ammo.

If you don’t give Shooters the opportunity to make things right, you will never know for sure if they are a bad organization or not.

My experience with them has been almost the exact opposite of the way you perceive yours to have been.

I do not doubt that if I were to call them and explain the situation they may offer to give me 6 rounds of 45. I could ask for nothing more, and I would not expect them to offer me anything more. However if I were to accept this fair offer then I would be well into the realm of diminishing returns, as of course a 100 mile round trip to collect a couple of bullets is worth neither my time nor my fuel. Nevertheless I will call them as a "heads-up", so that they will at least have the opportunity to check their stock. Whether that call is a worthwhile exercise will need to be judged by their future customers.

My point was that if Shooter's Station was not made aware of "short sheeted" boxes they will not be aware that there is a problem either with theft by customers or by their employees. I know that owner would want to know.

For what it is worth I don't think that a $35 charge to change sights is outlandish. I have seen sights changed out on many guns and I know it is a finicky operation and requires special equipment to do it correctly.
