Reason to steal more guns?

DALLAS — The city's first gun buyback event in February was a big success. Now, Dallas leaders are ready to do it again.

Another gun buyback event is set for August 15.

"It's very, very important that we continue to encourage keeping our city and our citizens safety by getting these guns off the street," said Deputy Mayor Pro-tem Dwaine Caraway

The February buyback netted some 150 weapons. Police and the City of Dallas say this month's goal is 300 guns.

The event will take place at Dallas City Hall. For each gun turned in, the city will issue a $50 Kroger gift card. Participants will have to provide a valid identification.

"It's about family, and it's a commitment that we have to make sure that we take every effort... every effort to educate and get these guns off the streets and out of the hands of these kids," Caraway said.

I think someone mentioned that We should hold a Better buyback program, since these firearms all end up being destroyed.

Pay $50 CASH (not a gift card) for each firearm turned in, and don't require identification!

I wonder how the PD would take someone standing around in the parking lot, offering more money than they are for a few 'choice picks' that might be noticed.

Why don't they do those around here. I think it would be fun to get a group of friends and go and ask for the same amount of money as they're handing out in the "Cash for Clunkers" boondoggle, and then walk away when they won't.

How does the City of Dallas "buy back" something they never owned in the first place, using someone else's money? I have yet to see that explained to my satisfaction.

I never for the life of me could figure out the concept, except of course, that the cities were trying to cut out the pawn shop middleman as a fence for buying stolen guns. :banghead:

I suspect if you advertised $100 per gun, no questions asked, you would do well. You'd get some dogs, but most guns in my experience are worth at least $100

Two problems:

1 - The city gets free advertising, plus the ads paid for with tax money. You can't privately buy that advertising and come out on the deal.
2 - I bet the City PD would love for one of your bought guns to turn out stolen, so they could charge you for receiving stolen goods, and stop your operation.

You could circumvent #1 by setting up in sight of the official location, but that would just make #2 more likely

I think I remember some people saying they tried to buy the guns for $100 before the city could but were stopped by the local LEOs. Monopoly anyone?

It would be fun to stage a larger operation - one or two guys buying guns, and more folks - MANY more folks - running camcorders when the LEOs come to shut them down. :evil2:

From what I've read, LEOs don't like video records when their actions aren't explicitly in accordance with actual written law.

Why didn't I think of that?

The buy back programs are more about PR than affecting gun numbers.

Even 1050 guns would not be a drop in the proverbial bucket.

Well, the city is a tad short on revenue... ;-)

That's a good idea, especially if one or more cameras have a wifi link to offsite storage, in case they go all JBT.

Even better would be having Perry or Abbott and some undercover state cops ready to bust the local LEOs for official oppression. That would be a great sting operation to help restore civil rights in Dallas.

I did try to purchase a few guns at the Febuary program. A cop came and threatened to arrest me. He said that it is illegal to "buy", but not sell, guns in the perimeter of Downtown Dallas. I told him I did not believe him and he started the whole arrest process until I backed down. If there's anyone with more guts then me, I'll support you.

You could have done a citizen's arrest on him since they were "buying" guns when it is, as he said, illegal. :cup:
