Shipping firearm from CA to TX

Post by gigag04 »

My dad is passing his Gold Cup .45 down to me and we are figuring out how to get it here. I know FFL to FFL, but is there anything special I should know before he sends it out?

I was gonna talk to mike at champion firearms and have it sent there if its ok with them.

Am I good to go?

That's all you need on your end: just arrange for an FFL to receive it. You'll stop by, do the 4473, pay a small fee ($10 around here; other areas are higher), and take home your gun.

Since your dad is in California (with handgun registration), he might need to do something to get it off the books out there.

Actually, it doesn't even have to be FFL to FFL (although that is probably easier). Your dad can ship it directly to an FFL and you can pick it up there (usually for a small fee). In my experience, Federal Express is the best way to ship firearms. You have to ship it overnight priority, but they have no problem with it. UPS will only let you ship it if you have an FFL or if you're sending it directly to a manufacturer for repairs. By federal law, you can NOT ship handguns through USPS.

Your dad will need to include a copy of his driver's license when he mails the gun to the FFL near you....and he will also want a copy of the FFL's paperwork.

It sounds complicated but it's really pretty simple.

If you'd like to hear it from the horse's mouth instead of taking my word for it, you can visit the ATF Website and find out everything you need to know.

I'd go over and talk to Mike or Katy and see what they say. You never know, if you've done enough business with them they might do it for free. It won't hurt to ask. I'm sure they will be able to tell you what your father needs to do as well.
