50+ years ago, the .222 Remington and .222 Remington Magnum were extremely popular here and served as the basis for the .223.

The popularity of the .223 caused the decline of the .222's.

I shot my .222 Remington last Sunday. It's deadly accurate. As Mike1951 stated, the .223 was based on the .222. With the right dies you can form .222 cases from a .223. You just push back the neck and trim them to the right length.
