Traveling on motorcycle with gun

Post by AC »

I want to go to a gun show more than 200 miles away. I want to ride my motorcycle there. If I buy a gun there, what are the ramifications of bringing the gun home? I will bring a range bag to pack it in and secure to my sissy bar. I have no saddlebags or lockable tour packs. What about if I stop for lunch and take the range bag inside with me so it isn't stolen off the bike while I am inside?

ETA: I do not have my CHL yet. Still in waiting room.

I'm guessing you don't have a CHL. I gather that from the tone of your post, but am not certain.
If you have a CHL, then just keep it on your hip. I always tell dh (although he disagrees) that someone has to get rather intimate with me to get my gun off of my hip.
If you don't have a CHL, can you make some type of modification to your bike's luggage area to secure the gun? I hate for it to get into the hands of a thug. I know one woman on another forum that lives with a lot of other people. She locks her rifles up with a cable.
Would you consider a cable lock securing it to the frame of the body, then hiding it in a compartment?
I'm not as well versed on bikes, so I can't give you as much info.

Under the Texas travel laws...I believe that you would be perfectly legal to transport your firearm on your motorcycle while travelling, as long as it is purchased in Texas and not another state(that would require FFL shipping).
I don't know about taking the gun inside with you....that might be a little tricky. I personally would not do this, but I do not know what the legal ramifications are.
Have you signed up for a CHL class yet?? If not, I can't think of a better reason so you can avoid this situation in the future! Best of luck.

Well, I guess I'll just have to stop for lunch at a Sonic! Just sit on the bike outside.

If my CHL gets here before Aug. 12th, I'll be good to go inside!

That is a wonderful idea! I would have never thought of Sonic!

I have to ask the other people in the forum....should you be pulled over, do you have to notify an officer that you are travelling with a firearm? I do not believe that you have an obligation to notify them, but I could be wrong.

Sounds like you already got a solution.

What kind of bike do you ride?

Nice looking bike!

What were you planning on? Bungy'ing (sic) the bag to the front forks?

Brings back memories of 25 to 40 + years ago (first bike was in '64). Sold my last bike in '83, a full dresser. Was a member of the South Plains Roadriders there in Levelland and a member of TMRA. Did ralley's all over the state, loads of fun while we had it. Of course with a full dresser we had plenty of places to lock up my weapon.

Where are you going to the gun show?
You live in Lubbock... Amarillo, Odessa, Abilene, Ft. Worth/dallas?

Hopefully your CHL will arrive before the show!

But, I'll let Mr. Cotton advise in the manner of law in Texas. In New Mexico (I go there a lot (Ruidoso (Aspencade))) they 'allow' you a 'buffer' zone of 3 to 5 feet around the bike.

I have a detachable sissy bar that attaches under the seat. Will change the seat to the stock seat that is a little more comfortable on a long ride.
The gun show is in Wichita Falls. Will be a nice ride from Lubbock thru Guthrie, Benjamin, & Seymore. With the price of gas, makes sense to me, and I get to ride. Was wondering about "on or about your person" if my CHL doesn't get here by then.

I'll try:

Section 46.02 does not apply to a person who:
(3) is traveling;

(i) For purposes of Subsection (b)(3), a person is presumed to be
traveling if the person is:
(1) in a private motor vehicle;
(2) not otherwise engaged in criminal activity, other than a Class
C misdemeanor that is a violation of a law or ordinance regulating
traffic;
(3) not otherwise prohibited by law from possessing a firearm;
(4) not a member of a criminal street gang, as defined by Section
71.01; and
(5) not carrying a handgun in plain view.

Like previously suggested, I believe, that until I got my CHL, I'd eat at a Sonic (R). :grin:

Another vote for Sonic. I think you greatest problem is not going to be food stops but pit stops, & I anit talking bike fuel either. Carry you bag in there w/ you.

I like it. The bags are darn handy. course they are to small to put a long gun in ;-)
