chl, id question.

Post by glock17 »

ive had my chl for a few weeks and just wanted to ask about a few things that im unsure of. my first question is: i know it is always good to show yur chl to a leo when asked for id. What if i need to show a leo my id for a reason such as being in an accident and filling out a report, or if i was witness to an accident? another question i have: in situations where someone would need to show 2 forms of identification should i use my chl as one? i cant think of any situations that would require this but i just would like to kno in case it comes up.

If you are carrying, anytime a LEO asks for your ID, you should produce your DL & CHL.
I personally would produce both carrying or not. But not required.
I would not use my CHL as a second form of ID.
Others opinions may differ.

It's not just a good idea, it's the law (although there is no longer a penalty for failure to do so). The law says that you need to show your CHL anytime an LEO asks for your ID if you are carrying.

I can't think of a reason why I would use my CHL as a second ID; most times people who request 2 forms of ID just ask for one picture ID and another form such as a credit card. But, it's completely up to you....there is no law saying you can't use it.

If your showing your CHL to every person who asks for ID (not including LEO) then you are outing yourself. :nono:

The only other place I would show the CHL is when buying a firearm...that certainly speeds up the process nicely :tiphat:

Other than that I would keep it as hidden as I could.

If you have any doubt just ask. Sir I have a CHL do you need to see it ? Thats what I did during an accident situation.
In my case he just said no and continued to take my report.

I'll show my CHL to a police officer if he asked for ID. I want him to know I'm not trying to hide anything. I've shown my CHL to my apartment manager and my best friend. Beyond that it's nobody's business. I would never use it as a 2nd ID. Mums the word. :iagree:

I have been asked for two forms of PICTURE ID a few times since I got my CHL and I have always used my CHL has the 2nd picture ID. I guess an alternative would be your DL+passport. I don't know what other picture IDs people might have.

Last time might have been when touring the Pentagon, the officers checking me in required two forms of ID. I was proud to display my CHL and DL from Texas as a statement to the gestapo feds.

that's true . there's no better 2nd ID than a CHL .
it is an official state issued identification with matching info .

i have never been asked for a second form of ID , but it sure would come in handy if needed .

OK I have a question here.

If you don't have either a passport or a CHL (neither of which are actually required by law) then what the heck would you show?

I would still try and keep my CHL a secret personally, but that is just my paranoia showing.

i guess a credit card .
i just remembered a loooong time ago i went to cash a check at a bank that i didn't bank at .
they required a second ID , which i didn't have .

they said my car insurance card would do , so i went to the truck and brought it back in .

Your Permanent Resident Card :P

Lol, ok, so that only applies to the few that have them... but for people that have them, they are probably one of the most difficult forms of picture ID to get.
(those of you that have been through the process know! I went through it with my wife a few years ago.... omg if you thought getting a CHL was bad....)

I had someone try and tell us that it was not 'good enough' ID to notarize something with once. I respectfully told them to go back and look it up again, because I could guarantee it was.
