JJHerold Holsters

Post by KD5NRH »

First off, I have no connection to this company other that the fact that Josh gave me a discount in return for suggestions and getting the word out.

I recently recevied the two holsters pictured above from JJHerold Holsters, http://www.jjheroldholsters.com/

On the left is my Taurus PT-99AF with Pachmayr grips, and on the right is my Colt Government Model 1911A1 with Hogues. Both pistols are otherwise unmodified except for routine maintenance, sight paint, and minor trigger work.

Let's start with the Taurus. While the double stack design and slightly thick grips make it somewhat unwieldy, the holster does an excellent job of keeping it in place and tight against my side. With a little consideration, it can easily be concealed under a tucked shirt one size larger than I normally wear, or untucked under a vest. Given its bulk, tucked shirt concealment is something I would not have expected prior to trying out this holster.

The Colt is definitely the more concealable, since I can easily tuck it under my normal shirt size, and the width of the holster with its mag carrier helps to reduce the bulge that would be a dead giveaway with the Taurus in the wrong pants. While the mag isn't in the perfect location, it does make a good place to keep one more spare than I would normally carry. The main drawback here, though, is that it doesn't work very well with my Chip McCormick mags due to the bumper pad interfering with a proper grip on the gun. This isn't an issue with mags that don't have the pad, however.

Construction is excellent on both holsters, with the leather being stiff enough to hold its shape, yet just flexible enough to conform to the body. After a couple of weeks of wear, neither holster is showing any signs of stitching being overstrained, and the leather is breaking in nicely. Delivery took about a week after I ordered them, which puts Josh well ahead of the lead times for almost any other custom holster maker out there.

Overall, the holsters are well made, of good quality materials, and I expect them to last quite a while. I've been using one or the other pretty much constantly since I got them, and I'd have to say that they are a valuable part of my collection.

FIWIW, I usually wear the Taurus under the Coronado vest they're pictured on above, with a Bersa T380 in the vest's concealment pocket. Concealment is good enough to allow me to take off the vest (and secure it properly, of course) if the situation dictates. The Colt gets worn with or without the vest, depending on mood.
