Looking for a S&W gunsmith in Dallas

Post by tseabourn »

I have a S&W 3913 that I'd like to replace the standard safety / decocker assembly with the optional spring-loaded decocker-only assembly. I've called several gunsmiths that were recommended to me, and the answers I've gotten to this question range from "it wouldn't be safe to have a gun without a safety!" to "...you should send it in to S&W to have that done." There was one who said he'd could do it -- he described it as only needing to remove the firing pin block to make it work. I'm no gunsmith, but that didn't sound right (or safe!), and it certainly doesn't involve getting the appropriate parts from S&W.

I'm not opposed to sending it to S&W, but the costs for shipping via UPS/FedEx Next Day is over $50. Smith & Wesson indicates that it's not a "drop-in" replacement and should be done by a "qualified" gunsmith, but it doesn't seem like it should be that hard! I don't know why I'm having such a hard time.

I can only assume that the smiths I've talked to don't know what I'm talking about. Perhaps someone that works specifically on S&W's would have a better idea.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Todd

Lone Star Guns in Plano was, for years, one of only two authorized S&W repair centers in Texas. Somewhere in the nineties, Smith decided that all warranty repairs would have to go back to the factory, but Lone Star was still a good source of information, parts, and modification for anything Smith & Wesson. I don't know if they're still in business or not.

Lone Star is out of buisness. You might check with Gunmaster's, but think Kent is no longer doing gunsmith work there either. :grumble

If you decide to ship it back to smith for service find an FFL dealer that will send the gun via Postal Service to them. While commoners like you and I can not send a handgun via USPS an FFL can. As an added benefit you can send it using what ever level of service you prefer and/or can afford. I have done this with one handgun and total shipping was a hair over $11.00, of course the price of stamps has gone up two or four times since then.
How do you explain a dog named Sauer without first telling the story of a Puppy named Sig?

I like the sound of that. S&W wanted $100 for the modification -- I couldn't hardly justify $50+ just for shipping!

Thanks for the info...

Frank Smith is still in business in Comanche, TX. He has a ranch and smith shop and is still a S&W repair station. Go to LSG,Inc. com
