Moved to TX from KS with KS CHL???

Post by JaredM »

Hello fellow 2a exercisers!!!
I recently moved to Texas (couldn't be happier!!!! :clapping: ) from Kansas. I have a current CHL from KS. TX does recognize the KS CHL. What do I need to do in order to get my TX CHL? I'm hoping that because TX recognizes the KS CHL, I will not have to go through the class, waiting period, etc, but this is why I come to you goods folks for help.

What do I need to do here in TX?

Thank you all in advance!!

Welcome to Texas and to the TexasCHLforum. We'd glad to have you. Unfortunately, you are going to have to take a CHL course to get your Texas CHL. The initial class is 10 hrs and all renewals are 4 hrs. I wish I had a short-cut to suggest, but there isn't one.

Thank you Charles. So I understand correctly… Now that I am a TX resident, my KS CHL is no longer recognized here in TX?

Thanks again for the info, and the welcome!

If your Kansas license is still valid, then Texas recognizes it and you are legal to carry. If Kansas does not have a non-resident license, then your license is no longer valid after moving from Kansas and you need to get a Texas CHL to be legal to carry.

now, out of my own personal curiosity, and possibly for the benefit of JaredM, are there not a few differences in the laws covering CHL's as they pertain to non-resident reciprocity license holders?

Yes, first and foremost is the exemption to federal law about carrying a weapon in a school zone. You can only carry in a school zone (within 1000' of a school) with a CHL issued by the state in which the school resides.

From handgunlaw.us : "Kansas only issues Non Resident Permit/Licenses to Active Duty Military Personnel stationed in Kansas. If you are active military and stationed in Kansas even though you have residence in another state you can apply for a Kansas Permit/License to carry. Apply the same as a resident." I don't know if their is something else that will allow a current holder to change his/her address on the Kansas CHL that will allow them to hold on to it as valid until the expiration date.

It is best every person in Texas carry on a Texas CHL to both support our cause by adding to our numbers and so the holder can learn Texas law properly. A CCW holder must obey the law of the state they are in. I would begin the process immediately to get your TX CHL as well as checking to see if your Kansas license is even still valid now that you live in Texas. You may be illegally carrying while assuming your Kansas license is valid with the state of Kansas now that you have moved. The States issuing authority in Kansas should be checked to make sure the information you get is current and correct. If you carry on the license of another state you are responsible to insure that license remains valid and that can only be done thru, in your case, the state of Kansas.
