Anybody else calling bull on this? A fight broke out, with one of the fighters carrying a gun, and in the melee the gun "went off" and killed the other fighter. Crazy how the gun happened to discharge while on the guy's person and happened to strike the other fighter, and happened to be good enough placement to kill him. And both were marinesMarine shot as fight escalatesComment Email Print Share Associated Press
HAVELOCK, N.C. -- Police in North Carolina are saying a Marine was accidentally shot to death when he got into an argument with a friend over the Texas-Nebraska football game.
Police say 21-year-old Johnathan Clinton Rodriguez was shot early Sunday after banter escalated with a fellow Marine at a home in Havelock, a town near the coast. Authorities say Rodriguez got into a scuffle with 23-year-old Lionel Loya, who had a gun that went off during the struggle.
Loya has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. It's unclear whether he has an attorney. He was transferred to military authorities who didn't immediately return a telephone message Monday night.
Texas beat Nebraska 13-12 on a last-second field goal to win the Big 12 championship Saturday.

Yet another black eye for gun owners, as well as the USMC.

Re: Man shot in football argument
The military services have been heavily infiltrated over the last decade or two by members of gangs. This looks like a good example to me.

Dang, I did not know that. Any particular reason why? Easy access to weapons?

I don't know a lot of gang members that are big college football fans; but then I could be wrong as I really don't know that many gang members (well, maybe one.) Sounds more like maybe and alcohol and testosterone incident to me, but that is just speculation on my part.

Re: Man shot in football argument
I did a job at Camp Lejeune a few years back. Some of the Courts Martial that were written up in the "Globe & Anchor" were mind boggling.
Prior to that, I was working at Ft. Bragg, NC. Some of the 82nd Airborne 'troopers' were also capable of mind boggling escapades. As a CSM with the 2nd Battalion told me one day when I was remarking on a recent event, "not all soldiers are good soldiers".
God Bless the good ones and try to help the others.

The History Channel has a series called Gangland. One episode described how some join the military for various reasons and use those skills afterwards on the streets.

Re: Man shot in football argument
The primary reasons that we were offered (as Staff NCO's in the Marines being made aware of the trend) was to open up venues for drug-trafficing (Crips and Bloods type)and recruitment of potential members nearing discharge (particularly Aryan gangs).

There is the remote possibility that I am wrong when I speculate. But I doubt it.Shorts wrote:The Marine was from Sinton

If you say that in regards to it being drug/gang related, anything's possible. To speculate either way without knowing all the facts is just that, speculation. San Pat Co and Corpus area in general has really seen an increase in these related problems over the past 10 years. We have some extended family neighbors who, sadly, have been killed due to being mixed up in these kinds of things. And it was not just a random act of violence either. It was a hit-type scenario where even extended family living out of town was killed. As I said, sad situation. What makes these things worse is even LEOs are mixed up in these things. So the people who are suppose to be the good guys and helping are themselves on the wrong side. No one is safe.
On the surface, if I was guessing I'd say alcohol and testosterone like KeithB said. But who knows except for the ones involved.

Not sure what you're getting at. I'm simply stating that evil infiltrates everywhere and bad things happen to anyone anywhere. There's a constant struggle.

Follow the money. Take the gigantic profit away and what do you suppose will happen to the drug trade?Shorts wrote:Oldgringo wrote:Kinda' like when alcohol was outlawed during the noble experiment that came to be known as PROHIBITION?Shorts wrote:

There's also the tactical training to make them better at urban combat and hand to hand combat.
