Is this a "good shoot"?

Post by A-R »

.

IMPORTANT: WATCH THE 10-SECOND VIDEO FIRST BEFORE READING ANY OF THE TEXT. WATCH IT A FEW TIMES CAREFULLY

Moderators: if this has been posted before, feel free to remove. I couldn't even figure out how to search for it in previous posts.

Anyway, I received this video in an email tonight and needless to say it was eye-opening. :eek6 Someone needs to show this video to the editors/writers at the Austin Stateman (and explain the point to them ad nauseum until the get it).

Below is the full text from the email that explains everything.

*************email text below*************

POLICE SHOOTING Watch The Video BEFORE You Read all The Text.

Do the video first--two or three times if you want---THEN read the text below...

Watch the video and what do you see?

Officers ordering the suspect to put the assault rifle down and it appears he is complying and then he is shot!

Is that what you see?

Want to know what it is like to work the streets and what risks you face daily?

Watch the video again and watch the suspect's right hand while he places the rifle down with his left hand.

What you don't see, but the officer behind the suspect does see, is the suspect pulling a hidden handgun from his rear pants with his right hand.

Watch as the bad guy goes down, the handgun is still in his right hand. Just a reminder -- what you think you see at first does not always tell the truth.

Watch it again, and learn! Then pass this on to EVERYONE on your email list so they can do the same.

Its time Mr Citizen (and the press !!) has a better understanding of why this guy REALLY got shot not to mention the cops laying their lives on the line...

Great post. If that video has been on here before, I haven't seen it. Gotta tell ya....I didn't watch the video close enough the first couple of times. Talk about situational awareness. Would have been so easy to get tunnel vision in a situation like that and only focus on the perceived immediate threat.

If it is a "good shoot" it is only so in the Hollywood sense. It is not real, but a staged event. No officer acts like the one who did the "shooting" acts. Nobody casually walks up to a suspect who has just pulled a gun on officers, been shot, and casually re-holsters his weapon. That is Hollywood's idea of how a shooting goes down. This is a good example of why you cannot trust everything you see on the internet.

Meh. Contrived scenario.

The front officer would have been justified to shoot if the BG had presented a handgun after laying down the rifle. He would not be justified just because the rear officer yelled "Gun!" and opened fire. The rear officer would be justified if he saw the entire scene develop, and saw the BG draw a gun after laying down the rifle; he should yell "Gun!" and shoot to stop the suspect.

I'd have to got back and watch it a few more times, but my first impression (after three viewings) was that the front officer wasn't justified in shooting at all. The timing suggested to me that the rear officer popped around the corner to see the suspect appearing to reach for the rifle (even though he had just laid it down), so his input wasn't valid.

I really can't come up with a scenario by which the front officer would be legally justified to shoot.

I saw this before I think it is a training video. When the BG puts rifle on ground he reaches for a hand gun the LEO in the rear sees it and yells gun rounds fly, I think it is a bad situation having a LEO in front and one in the rear that is how friendly fire happens.

:iagree: that is the scenario. Unfortunately you end up in those situations sometimes as you must box-in the suspect. If you notice though, the LEO's are at different angles; the front LEO is the only one with the shooting angle as the suspect is in between the rear LEO and the videographer.

I've seen this before and :iagree: with Keith B.

As far as justification is concerned, that will be determined by the review board as the two LEO's watch TV on administrative leave. The deceased's relative's attorneys could also be expected to have their opinions on the shooting's justification.

I would also point out that both officers probably already had their guns drawn well before they ordered the suspect to the ground. A CHLer in a similar position might not have that luxury, in the sense that an LEO can be proactive and have gun drawn well in advance of actually needing it; whereas a CHLer has the burden of concealment... ...the point being that a CHLer might not have been able to react in time to the unfolding situation.

There is a gun is the right hand of the suspect as he falls to the ground, I think it is a good shoot.

All I have to say is that was a very good hit by the LEO in that with one shot he put the BG down flat on his back! ;-)

Very interesting video. This is a great example of what witnesses could "see" and report on a shooting. Things are not always what they appear to be. It took me several viewings to even see the gun in the guy's right hand as he hit the ground.

Good shoot. The guy still had a gun in his hand.
