We Lost a True Hero Today: Robert Howard

Post by Skiprr »

Robert Howard, a Green Beret, was nominated three times for the Medal of Honor, the only soldier in modern history receive three nominations. His first nomination was downgraded to the DSC. His second and third nominations were simultaneous for two separate actions and the Medal of Honor was awarded for the first of them, the other was downgraded to the Silver Star: an individual may receive only one Medal of Honor. Wounded 14 times in 54 months of combat duty in Vietnam, Howard was also awarded eight Purple Hearts.

Robert Lewis Howard, of Alabama, is believed to be the most decorated American warrior in the modern era.

We lost this Great American Hero today. Cancer finally accomplished what no external enemy had been able to achieve.

Rest in peace, Colonel Howard.

A soldier's soldier and a true hero, our nation's the less for the loss of Robert Howard and others of his generation.

There were some 58,000 Americans killed in the 10 years of Viet Nam. Will somebody please tell me what this undeclared war accomplished other than the advancement of US ordnance delivery systems and the introduction of the M-16?

Same goes for the 'overseas contingency operations' of Iraq and Afghanistan, what have they accomplished?

IMO, we should never have invaded Iraq. The Iraqis were not, nor are not, a threat to the US. Besides that, their now deceased leader maintained order in his neighbourhood; namely, Iran. If we'd minded our own business and let well enough alone, we may not have the Iran threat that we have today. Saddam would have squashed them like a bug - again.

Afghanistan, OTOH, attacked the USA and should be dealt with accordingly. Accordingly does not mean another endless Viet Nam. It would be appropriate, IMO, to give them notice to turn over the Taliban/Al Queda by date certain or Nuke 'em! Pakistan, are you listening? Enough is enough!

I digress, my apologies and condolences to Col. Howard's family. :patriot:

Governor Perry wrote:As one of America’s most decorated veterans, Colonel Howard inspired everyone he met to consider their own commitment to our nation’s essential values, and was the bravest soldier I ever met. His unshakable commitment to freedom, displayed in countless episodes of battlefield gallantry, lives on in the actions of our military men and women who continue to serve in hostile conditions overseas.
