Its amazing how many people (including one good friend) will chastise me for my opinion regarding drugs (esp marijuana). I refuse to allow it anywhere near me/my home if i can help it.

There are so many casual marijuana smokers everywhere that i feel im the only oddball around. Sorry, but im not about to place myself in a situation where someone leaves a joint in my car/home and then i have to explain it to some police officer.

Its one of the reasons why i now live alone. You cant trust what your room mates will do, or what kind of friends they will have over.

Clowns like your room-mate's brother are what make people very leery of hiring or having anything to do with felons after they have served their time. There are some who clean up their act, but unfortunately the clowns seem to greatly outnumber them...

I sometimes wonder if we shouldn't change our prison-system to resemble the one in Japan. In my opinion when you become a Felon you basically lose all of your civil-rights and should be treated as a bad-guy.

The OP's story just illustrates my belief that our prison system simply makes a criminal more of a criminal in the long run, with very few exceptions (not to say that there are not some).

Isn't this story a textbook example of how criminals don't obey laws?

If you are proposing criminals convicted of a felony should be locked up for life I would have to disagree with that.

1) I don't want to pay for it across the board
2) While many will revert to previous behavior, I feel it's much more egregious to convict/demonize an innocent/reformed person than to make sure you throw every offender away just to be safe. I'm sure others disagree with me on this point.

No, I am proposing that convicts are not coddled while in Prison. Read up on the Japanese prison system. It is fascinating. Believe it or not, when they bust US Servicemen that end up in their Prison System (it is part of our Status of Forces Agreement) they put them in what they consider a "lenient" and separate part of the system.

The cost to house an inmate is more than what many people make in a year. This is paid for by hard working folks trying to get by in a crap economy. Whatever happened to penal colonies? There are lots or islands off the coast of Alaska. They could make a good living fishing while wearing ankle bracelets.....

They could farm desert oases. or live as fishermen on abandoned oil derricks. Why pay for their food and housing? Why put up with their crime? Vote for me and I'll bring back penal colonies!

If someone did that to me, I think I would call the police after they left and tip them off to a felon with drugs and a gun. Give the license plate number and vehicle description and where they're going if I know it.
