PHILADELPHIA – A Plano Senior High graduate and her boyfriend were shot to death after they confronted a man raping a young woman in the driveway of the boyfriend's apartment, police said.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Kira Derrick, 29, was returning to boyfriend Anthony Burno's apartment in the city's Fern Rock neighborhood Wednesday after a night out when they came upon the attack. The 18-year-old woman broke free and began screaming about the assault, and she and the couple then fled while the attacker fired at them with a semiautomatic handgun, according to police. The three tried to hide nearby, but the assailant found them and fired more shots as they lay on the ground, Chief Inspector Joseph Fox said. "It sounds like it was all happening in a matter of seconds," Inspector Fox said.
Ms. Derrick and Mr. Burno died at the scene. The woman who had been attacked was also shot but was expected to recover, police said. A suspect was arrested.
Kevin White, 28, of Philadelphia was arrested a short time later and will be charged with murder, rape, aggravated assault and other offenses, Inspector Fox said. Police said they recovered a gun during the arrest.
Police said Ms. Derrick, who worked for the Social Security Administration, had moved back to Philadelphia about two years ago. Ms. Derrick lived in the Dallas area for about eight years before moving about five years ago, said her ex-husband, Dante Reed. Mr. Reed, who lives in Plano, said Ms. Derrick moved to the suburb with her mother and stepfather the summer before her junior year. She graduated from Plano Senior High School and attended Collin County Community College, he said.
Mr. Reed first saw Ms. Derrick when she was 16 and on the phone in the Collin Creek Mall. He was attracted to her immediately, he said. She was gorgeous, friendly, "a real loveable person." The couple dated for five years and married in a planned wedding in Las Vegas. "It was wonderful," he said. They broke up two years later, and Ms. Derrick followed her parents, who had gone back to Philadelphia. The former couple continued to talk occasionally. During their last conversation, about four months ago, Ms. Derrick talked about her children, from a later marriage. Mr. Reed said he was shocked by the news of her death.
