NYT Gun Chart

Hey all...just thought you'd like to see a chart that a friend sent me that was done by the NYT. I think it was attached to a whiny article. Note the stats on who has the most firearms!

It basically shows why all the other countries in the world (including UN members) want to ban all arms. Once again anti-gun propaganda is turned on it's head and is actually good news for us.

560 people a day die due to criminals?

Wow, i'm glad I carry a gun wherever it's legal and prudent!

I have a hard time believeing that firearm accidents kill 50 people a day.

I noticed that Africa has a lot of guns. Are civilians allowed to carry there?I'm curious about carrying one if I ever get to do mission work over there.

These are worldwide quotes from what I see. In the scope of the millions of firearms out there, and the billions of people, I could see a lot more than 50 people dying per day from firearms accidents.

Between drunks, fights, "games", true accidents, horsing around and such, I bet that 50 worldwide is a pretty accurate figure.

I can't tell from the linked site or the sources of the stats HOW they gathered their information. The commentary in the link in the NY Times is fairly telling, though, indicating that they wish to obscure the relevant information and slant it in such a way as to support their agenda (typical, really of the media generally). They have concatenated military with civilian use of firearms in such a way as to obscure the actual source of the deaths. For example, they claim that 560 deaths each day are criminal homicides, but groups like this often refer to genocides as "criminal homicides" so whose measure of "criminal homicide" is being used? They further reinforce my doubts by having the leader of the "article" be about the genocides in the DRC since 1998, and concatenate the numbers from violent death (of undefined source but probably military conflict if you've been following the regional events) and disease related deaths.

As to WHO gathered this "information" I would refer you to the bottom of the page where it says "Sources: Small Arms Survey; Alun Howard, International Action Network on Small Arms; C.I.A. World Factbook; Control Arms Campaign; U.N. Experts Panels on Democratic Republic of Congo; "Mortality in the Democratic Republic of Congo," The Lancet."

I don't know about the Small Arms Survey, but the International Action Network on Small Arms is a typical anti-gun organization (details here: http://www.iansa.org/about.htm) who happens to list their first funder as the Government of the UK as well as several other governments of Europe who have a history of attempting to disarm their populace. I suspect that the other funders listed are also anti-gun organizations. I'm somewhat surprised they don't list the Brady Campaign based on the way they have twisted the information.
