AR15 Scope advice

Howdy folks,

I just got my first AR15.

It's a Bushmaster AR 15 - Mod XM15 E2S Cal 223 - 5.56MM Carbine 16' barrel. Detachable Carry Handle, Iron sites. Teflon Black Finish.
Very nice weapon.

However, I need to put a scope on it. I'm forced to shoot with my right eye because i'm right handed and I have major astigmatism issues in that eye even after glasses. At 100 yards most man sized targets are just a blur to me with that eye. My best solution is to put a scope on the gun.

I'm opting for a rail mounted scope because I don't really dig the type that attach to the carry handle. They may be servicable, but they look awkward to me. I'm instead opting to remove my carry handle since it's detachable and mount a scope on the rail there. I ordered the scope and leapers/mount and got it set up, but ran into a problem. On my barrel the iron sights are not removable and they are square in front of the scope when it's mounted.

Oddly enough it seems that when the scope is mounted and I look through the lens i can't see the front sight at all, but the overall image does seem a bit blurry. I'm guessing the front sight is just too close to the scope and it's getting blurred out. In either case, this looks pretty goofy with that configuration on the gun and I'd like to fix it.

What options do I have aside from getting a new barrel w/o front sights or (shudder) cutting the front sights off which I would never do. It seems that I could get a taller set of leapers that will raise the scope just an inch or two, but I can't seem to find anything like that on cheaperthandirt.com

I figured out that the scope rings selection on CTD is available from this link. I just need some advice so that I order the right rings. I really dont want to bother with returning a $10 part I'm going to pay $10 shipping on. :)

You can order Part No: YHM-9370 from Bushmaster for $56.50 and have a local gunsmith install it or you can return your barrel to Bushmaster and they will install for you.

There are also several other companies that make a low profile gas block. Try SOG armory-

You can buy a gas block with rail and put a flip-up front sight on it.

Also, once you have the scope mounted, you're really not going to notice the front sight.

Plinking or defense?

Makes a huge difference. Magnified optic?

If you want a scope like you listed, I would get a detachable mount and flip sights. If it is for plinking, remove both sights and just run the scope. If for defense then run iron sights that co-witness through a non-magnified reflex type sight - ala trijicon, aimpoint, eotech etc. I like to setup the irons to co-witness in the bottom third of the optic (for defense setup).

You need a set of millett or warner xtra high rise mounts for the scope. You will not see the front sight in the scope. This is a lot cheaper than changing out the front gas sight with another gas block.

As another solution, Yankee Hill makes a riser for your specific purpose, that will raise the scope another 1/2 inch, so that your field of view is iron-sight-free. I used one of these on my Bushmaster M4, and although my optic of choice was an EOTech 512, it'll probably work with your scope too. I believe Yankee Hill charged about $40 bucks for it. Very easy - just remove the rear sight/carry handle, attach the riser, and attach the scope/rings to the riser.

After looking over what you guys posted I think i'm going to go with this option.

I kind of wish it was quick-detach, but i'm not overly concerned about that. There is a quick detach version of that rail that's a few bucks more. I may end up going with that.

I think i'm going to start a thread here in a few minutes about the AR build i'm contemplating. Cause, you know, you just can't have too many AR build threads :)
