Let me spell it out for you: I recently bought an 8lb and a 4lb keg of Green Dot, along with two 1-lb cardboard cannisters. I have already used one of the 1 lb cans, and there is slight evidence of rust at the steel bottom.

This powder will last me a long time, if it is not already damaged and if I can prevent future damage by not exposing it to humidity. Sure would like to break those large quantities down for use at my leisure. Right now I am reluctant to open either container for fear of letting moisture in.

I also have cardboard containers of several other types of powder (you can readily discern what they are by reading my original post.

To summarize--no, I am not selling anything. I am trying to protect/maintain the powder I own. If you are able to help, please contact me.

I store my bulk powder in the original containers and transfer a small amount into a "working bottle" as I need it. I live on the coast and the only thing I do is to make sure the master container is closed tight. I have some Accurate 223 and 246 (the old designation for 2230 and 2460) that is about 25 years old that still performs like new that I have stored like I described.

No. Some of us are just curious. I re-use Hodgdon containers to store loaded ammo because they have wide mouths. I merely recycle Alliant and Winchester containers because they do not. Knowing what use you had intended would also tell me whether to remove the labels or not.

In any case, let me try to help. Since my Green Dot and WW contains just go into recycling when I empty, I could certainly save them for you, though I'm not sure I will be emptying them fast enough to be of use to you.

Thank you. I have a sense of humor, but also a fairly low tolerance for abuse and distrus, especially when unwarranted (others might say that I'm old and crotchety).

I would be happy to take some Green Dot containers off your hands as you empty them. I really don't want to open a 4-lb keg until I can put the powder into 1-lb bottles. I may be unduly concerned, but I have a humidity meter in my living room, and it is seldom below 60%, and more often well above that. Add in the temp changes, and I am loathe to contaminate four or eight pounds of powder if I can help it.

I still have one more pound in a 1-lb can, so I can work with that for a little bit.

Want to know how paranoid I am? I have a three ounce dessicant pack in my Dillon's powder dispenser. If I could fit another into the mouth of my one-pound powder can, I'd have one in there too. But my can is an old cardboard one with a less-ths-one-inch-opening, so that's out. Best I can do is not open it any more than necessary (to refill the powder dispenser).

Yes, I will happily take one Green Dot container off your hands, and if you empty some more in the future, I will take them too. Let me know what I owe you.

I also picked up three pounds of Bullseye (at $8/ lb) at the gun show today; again, cardboard containers said to be "unopened" (but tops are kind of rusty and cardboard feels solid but I don't trust it) and I'd like to keep them unopened until I can find some plastic containers to put that powder into...

Bad idea, I'm thinking.
If I remember correctly, powder will degrade due to light. That's why it comes in opaque packaging.

I'd be more concerned about the potential for breakage. Smokeless isn't an explosive, but it still burns really vigorously at the slightest provocation. You don't want to have to vacuum it up with the typical Hoover.

Besides, Mason jar lids will rust. If I were going to use something other than the original containers, I'd start with relabeled jugs from other powders, and failing that, go for plastic kitchenware. I would, however, test the plastics with a couple ounces for a month or more first; IIRC, nitrocellulose (or possibly one of the additives in the powder) outgasses some solvents from the manufacturing process that can eat into certain plastics over time.
