Parking a gun on the table

Post by davidtx »

In reading the Carrying at Home thread, I noticed several responses about just parking a gun next to where you sit. I sometimes do the same thing, but have been growing uncomfortable about the practice. In my case, my recliner has a walking path behind and in front, so there is no way to orient the gun such that somebody might accidentally be swept by it when walking by. Its not much of a problem at the moment - my kids are grown and gone, so its just me and my wife and the rear path is seldom used.

Laying the gun on the bathroom counter while showering is not quite as problematic. Two directions are clearly out (towards the shower and towards the bedroom). That leaves towards the walk-in closet or towards my office (both would have to go through a wall).

The nightstand is OK - two directions pointing towards outside walls.

Am I being overly concerned?

You have your gun with you in the Shower?

Respectfully...yes...IMO

I understand your concern, but as we all know, a gun won't "go off" on its own.

However, like you, I do try to point it in a safe direction when placing it on
a coffee table or end table. It's just part of gun safety that we all practice
in our day to day life I guess.

Do some of you fellers have mafia connections or something? I am feeling a little bit left out knowing I don't have anyone out to get me. I have weapons here and there put away in drawers or up in a cabinet, but I don't normally carry a weapon around the house with me.

Regardless, I wouldn't worry to much about someone walking past the muzzle of a handgun sitting on the table. It is when you pick it up that you need to be careful. Think about all the guns pointing at people in the gun shop. There are hundreds of them at times. Not one of them spontaneously fires a round at folks walking by. :tiphat:

Thank your lucky stars for that - it's not romantic in the slightest.

We that carry at home or have one on the talbe w/in reach usually live in an elevated crime area. My situation is probably a good example.

Moved her in 1994. Good neighborhood. No crime. In the 15.5 yrs we have lived here there is now 3 drug houses w/in half mile of us. One resident that is know to "buy" or 'trade for' about anything someone "finds on the side of the road".

The General $ store on the corner that is our convenience store is where, 3yrs ago, a guy was finally rammed into by LEOs & he was taken down w/in about 15 ft of the front door. He did not get in the store. Really high on drugs. Heavily armed.

Well, just move!!! I used to say that too. Now I know. You cant just do that. Ours is PD for. We are approaching retirement time. Income will not make a today house pmt.
We are here.
Others are similar too.

That is my worst nightmare. You spend umpteen years paying your house off and then the once quite neighborhood you came to love turns bad on you. I live in Plano, which is a pretty safe city compared to many large cities. We have our share of crime, but it is not typically violent crime. Bad Guys would stand out like a sore thumb in my neighborhood.

No, not me - people I've looked after. It's hugely stressful and really devastating to relationships. I'm tempted to tell you the story about the team I was on covering a (legit) Russian businessman in South Africa whom the Russian mob was after - but you'd never believe me.

I use pocket holster for this purpose - it allows me to have an extra layer of safety built into the equation. My Glock 19 doesn't see much carry time in its' pocket holster, but it does spend a lot of time in it around the house.
