Question about purchasing a handgun

Post by dthlss1 »

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so forgive me if it's not. I'm new to Texas and I've already registered my car with TX so I can get my TX driver's license. I haven't gotten the plastic in the mail yet but I got the print-out, temporary license when I went and did the paper work at the DMV. My question is, is the temporary license, in conjunction with an additional form of ID (in my case, a military ID) sufficient to go down to Academy right now and buy a handgun, or do I need to wait for the actual driver's license to come in the mail?

Thanks for your help!

INAL but it seems like that could work. I guess I'll just go down to Academy when I have the money and see what they say. I'm not going to try and enforce the letter of the law or anything besides, it might be Academy's policy to require an actual state ID or driver's license. So, I'm waiting for a check to come as well as my driver's license. I guess it's a race now...although, I still can't guy a guy before I get that check... Oh, well. Thanks for your help!

You will need show a photo ID and you will need to have proof of Texas residency.

Example - military ID and orders stating you are stationed in Texas.

I just got back from Academy. Apparently my combination of military dependent ID, vehicle registration and temporary TX driver's license won't work. I need to wait for the actual driver's licence to come in the mail.

I haven't been able to find a small gun shop in San Angelo. The closest I got was Action Pawn but they don't have the gun I want.

My wife is in the Army, I'm her dependent :patriot:

I'll be her dependent as long as she's in the military, no matter how old I get

Since you are at Goodfellow ... You might want to give Jim a call at Between the Walls here in Midland. He can get anything you want. He orders on Monday AM and usually has it in house by Thursday or Friday. Here is his number:
(432) 687-4867 - 10am to 6pm Mon-Sat

Midland is just a nice drive and BTW is a great toy store. He'll even give you a free bumper sticker to that effect. Tell him Pete sent ya. ;-)

Just talked to Jim ... If the temporary TX driver's license (paper) has your picture on it, you're good to go. The military ID, even with the photo, won't help.

Unless his corner of the world does things differently, the temporary DLs dont have a picture. That was a bone of contention when DPS took our CA licenses last year and issued us paper temporary licenses. The issue of possibly needing photo ID was "not my problem" according to the friendly DPS worker. :totap:

The good news is it didn't take us very long at all to get our regular TX DLs so hang in there! :thumbs2:

Yeah! I totally had to renounce my California citizenship when I applied for my TX DL. I did all that on March 11. How long did it take to get your DL in the mail?

Also, I have a photo ID. It's my military dependent ID. It has a picture, my social, my name, my signature, expiration date, height, weight, birth date, eye color, hair color... Yet, somehow not good enough.

Oh, well... I'll just keep checking the mail for my DL.

I honestly don't remember but it was quite a bit shorter than what they told us. I want to say it was no more than two weeks but don't quote me on that.

Be thankful you have that at least! We were a little nervous that we might get carded while trying to use a credit card. Thankfully it wasn't an issue.

I was a little sad to give up my CA license at first but when work stopped deducting income tax from my check, I suddenly felt a lot better.

Off topic, how did you turn your Blackberry barcode into an image?
