Fishing trip turns into a matter of survival in Nueces Co.

This article came out today in the local paper and t sounds like something right out of Deliverence. It illustrates the need to provide someone with information regarding one's intended whereabouts before getting out in the boonies as well as other aspects of good preparation.

I'm taking my 6yr old son camping next month. I was planning on taking my Glock with me. Now I WILL be taking my Glock with me.
And I WILL be carrying concealed.

While I agree armed is better, a glock vs. guys at range with rifles equals bad day at black rock.

It seems that the whole world has gone completely insane. Those guys are lucky to be alive for sure. Darn good thing there was a game warden near by. I am an avid backpacker and hiker and a couple of times a year I backpack out alone for a few days. I can't even imagine something like this happening. I usually only take an air gun as a survival tool get small game in an emergency situation, but I may need to rethink that. I go pretty far off the beaten path, so I don't see may people. On rare occasions I have run across a lone hunter or two traveling on horseback, but they have always been extremely friendly. Times are changing I suppose.

From the description, I concluded that this must be the RR trestle and caliche road in question.

I see what look like ATV trails south of the Nueces, from the end of River Road to the tracks. The only nearby homes are those on River Road, and they're pretty low-rent. My money is on the suspects either living in that neighborhood, or hanging with someone who does. They might have ridden ATVs across the RR bridge(s) to do some recreational beer-drankin' and can-shootin'.

That's sure where I'd start looking.

The red line is the area lots of kayakers go to fish.

The area is navigable water (TPWD agrees) and so I suppose it's a gate instead of a fence to let canoes/kayaks etc drag through/over the small dam .... else they have to portage around. It isn't private waters, but a Conservation non-profit Corporation owns the land adjacent to the public navigable waterway, and they had every right to be on the water there.

Thanks ... I mentioned ATVs on the Forum where "fishboy" posts after reading your theory.
They are currently looking for four white males in their 20's...
Could be consistant with 4-wheelers etc, tire tracks might match up easier than shell casings ...
By the way, the journalist who reported this story on TV did find a whole bunch of casings. It was only about a mile from the Lonbonte boat ramp. (Fishboy did run into a rather less than freindly group of 4 white males in their 20s just prior to the occurrence there.)

This sounds to me a lot like some 'farmer(s)' protecting their retirement crop. Sounds like they didn't want to kill them, but just scare them off. That many rounds and no hole in the kayaks or people. Where I grew up it was very common for folks to plant their patch in the government forest service area and go out at night to do their cultivating. You would often hear of someone meeting another person with a rifle or shotgun telling them to turn around and leave.

I think you are probably correct, just like they were runnin' off the Revenuers away from the still/distillery back in the prohibition, they probably had a crop or a laboratory of some sort nearby.
