His intended audience is other proffessors. Many proffessors see themselves standing in front of a classroom full of students all of which are armed. He diffuses this fear rhetorically when he says "... I feel safe. Should I feel differently if those students were law-abiding citizens who understood firearm safety?" I thought it was a pretty elegant way of addressing the fears.KBCraig wrote:
That's the only muddled statement in his piece. The rest of it argues against restricting legal carry. He points out that licensees have had background checks and training, and have a very low crime rate. He makes the point that criminals will not be deterred by a campus ban.
It won't go down in the annals as a great piece of pro-gun editorial, but I thought he was clearly on the side of allowing licensees to carry on campus.

I think the fear of teaching in front of a group of armed students as legitimate, only because there are many stereotypes and social images of "armed students". I think most folks will see what I am getting at, and its not a situation where there are CHL-enabled armed students. In that context, I think the fear is a pre-existing one and is biased.
He also states that he wonders if he would be afraid of the same situation, if he knew they were all CHL'ers. I can see how folks would perceive that passage as muddy, as it wasn't exactly structured well or clear.
But then again, I wasn't the author.....

To be afraid to teach a class of armed CHLers is obserd. No one w/o it should be in there armed. The CHL holder has passed every background check. They have spent 21+ years not getting mad at teachers in grade school & not throwing hammers through the wall because they got a bad grade on a test. They have not been a legal or violence problem on the street or anywhere else.
I have pastored a church for 34 yrs. I have preached to folks about sin in their lives that some do not want to give up. I have no qualms about preaching (or teaching) to 100 well armed CHL holders or 10,000.
Safest church in the world.
What say ye Carlson1.

On the campus where I work we have a instructor in the Criminal Justice Dept that is a officer on the local PD as well.
I sent him a question regarding his opinion on CHL and what kind of firearms the local PD used.
I never mentioned that was CHL, just asking his opinion.
I've yet to hear back from this 2mo old message.
He is regularly coming on campus in uniform and I don't think I've seen him without his firearm since he became LEO (about 1.5yrs ago)
There's a couple other staff/facutly members on campus that do not dislike guns and one instructor has even brought several Civil War Era guns to class for demonstration purposes.
Personally, I would love to see CHL carry allowed on campuses. If it was allowed, I know I would carry.
