S&W 627 Performance Center Range Report

I finally traded one of my firearm for a used S&W 627 Performance Center. I don't normally shoot revolver. However I also have a 6 in. Python right now. I used to have a model 36 S&W in .38spl and Tauras tracker 6" 357mag. I have also shot Ruger GP100. I will use my Python as a comparison because in my opinion, it is in more of the same league as this S&W PC.

Here are my takes on the gun.

Triggers:
1) SA action is very very smooth. It is so far the smoothest of any revolvers that I have ever shot. It is a tad bit smoother(only a tad) than my python, but to be fair, my python is at least 30 years old.

2) DA action is very consistant. I feel that it is around 12-15 lbs (just my estimate). It has a stronger trigger pull than my python. Python DA action is smoother. But the funny thing is that I like the S&W trigger better. It is heavier than the Python, but it just feel consistant and solid.

Balance and feel:

S&W 627 PC is heavy about as heavy as a Python in my hands. However it is shorter and denser than Python. It has better ergonomic than the Python and better balance. S&W is a more natural pointer and its grip feels better in my hands.

Fit and Finish:

S&W 627 PC has a very very handsome finish. The pistol overall looks very nice. You can definitely see a good level of craftmanship went into it. However I have to say that Python has a more exotic and prettier finish. Something about the royal blue finish is just captivating. I would say that Python is more handsome.

Things that I don't like:

I really really don't like the moon clip thing. I would rather use a speedloader. The moon clip just feel clumsy and hard to get used to. Thank god, that S&W made it so you can shoot without using a moonclip, otherwise I would not even thinking about getting this gun. I also HATE, I mean HATE, the build in lock. The finish is handsome, but it is easily prone to scratches. I like the royal blue finish of the Python much better, more durable and handsome.

Conclusions:

I have to say that I can shoot S&W 627 PC better than my Python. It feels better and shoot nicer. S&W has more balance and feel better in my hands. But it is unfair to say that Colt Python is inferior. It is like comparing a 1969 Corvette (Python) to a 2006 Corvette (S&W 627 PC). Of course the S&W 627 PC going to have an edge on balance and feel because it receives benefits of newer technology and it is at least 30 years younger. I like my S&W, but Colt Python has its charm and still a joy to shoot. I really appeciate how Python shoot and feel. For a classic revolver, it is incredibly smooth and beautiful.

I would say that overall S&W 627 Performance Center is a very nice revolver with a hefty price tag of about $1,100 new on the street. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for no more no less. If you want a nice revolver and have the money, I would say go for it. If you don't, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. You can get a job done with a normal S&W 627 (kind of like a Z28 camero, when compare to Corvette). But if you are lucky like me and find one use, by all means go for it. Overall I would say . If you have the cash, you should buy it. It well worths the money.

P.S. That Python was Rey's old Python and now it is going to Carlson as soon as he comes down to College Station to pick it up.
