A Surprising Secret

Post by Rob Longenecker »

How does a Blue Angels video relate to a lesson on shooting?
If you check it out you'll see - it really does.

I take it that you mean that stocky guys who eat a lot of red meat and drink beer will survive better than the tall skinny guys who run a lot and have low blood pressure.

Point taken. Right on, brother!

Good point, more beer and weightlifting, less running. Will do!

Really though, thats very true. Observation can only take you so far.

See, I should have known that instead of taking the hugely valuable lesson about getting a shooting coach you guys would focus in on the fact that short, squatty guys with thick necks who drink beer and eat ribs can withstand higher g-loads while flying with the Blue Angels.

Let's all drink more beer and eat more BBQ in the event we're asked to ride in the back seat of an F18 at a Blue Angels airshow this year. Sounds like a plan, especially as a great excuse. I can hear it now.

Wife: If you don't stop eating so much you're going to bust your britches!

Me: But, honey I'm getting in shape to fly with the Blue Angels!

It could work.

Joking aside, when I was active duty Army, I talked with some AF fighter jocks, and was a little surprised to learn that they were only allowed to run 1.5 miles, no more than three times a week. And the reason was exactly what the video said: if they're in too good condition, they pass out more easily.

Since they were driving Lawn Darts (aka F16), I guess that was especially important.

I was a fire support officer, and I always enjoyed having the FACs come up to the OP. It gave us a chance to practice coordinating close air support. I got to work with F16s and F/A18s (including some Marines, once), but my favorite will always be the A10.

Love those A10s

Those things are so cool, the way they can pop up over a hill and obliterate a target with that nose-mount gatling gun. Very neat airplane. They had a couple of them at the Ft Worth air show last weekend.
