New here and to CHL

Post by Shu »

Hello, I have just stumbled accross this site since packing.org is down and I tell you what the wealth of information on here is astounding. I look forward to all your knowledge and what I will learn here.

Im really new to CHL but not to firearms been hunting for over 15 years.
I have been trying to get what I call the WAF(wife approval factor) to recognise the right for me to get my CHL.

I had some questions, thought and worries that have kept me from getting the CHL though. Do you think by having it that your are more suseptibal to harrassment by LEO. Also there are so many laws that you have to familarise
with so you will not get any trouble.

Your thoughts on this matter are greatly apprectiated and I look forward to being apart of this wonderfull community

Quite the contrary. Your CHL is a "good guy card". It means you are not a felon, don't beat your wife, have not been in minor legal trouble for at least 5 years, you pay your taxes, school loans and child support as required and have passed a class to know the laws of carrying and demonstrated your proficiency to an instructor.

BTW, I am a former cop and CHL instructor. I know MANY LEO's, and they all support the CHL program. There could be those officers who are opposed, but their numbers are small. As you read through the threads here, you will see the many positive experiences CHL holders have had with LE.

The class that you will take for your CHL will make all of the laws simple for you.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats for deciding not to be a sheep anymore.

Welcome aboard Shu. Glad to have you. This is a great place for new to shooting or new to CHL. In Texas, the vast majority of LEOs on the street are very CHL friendly. Find a gunshop where an officer works part time or see one in a store & ask them. Introduce yourself & tell them you are thinking about getting some training & getting your CHL. "What do you personally think about trained, law abiding citizens, w/ a CHL." These answers will not only help you but also help w/ the WAF also.
Read the LEO encounters on this forum also. that will show how CHL holders have been treated when stopped by great # of officers. That will be how you will probably be treated too.
The laws on CARRY are not that hard to learn.
Prohibited places - Schools & school events, court houses, LE offices, polling places, Post Office, any place w/ a VALID 30.06 sign that prohibits carry under authority of CHL.
It is not that hard or this dumb country boy could not manage to do it.
Time has me so will edit later. Welcome again. Let the wife read here too. We have many women that have a CHL & carry regular. My wife & Mother both included.

Welcome, Shu!

I completely agree with everything txinvestigator said. I just want to add that the best way to get the WAF is to get her into the CHL class. Informed people make informed decisions!

Shu...welcome...and sit down with your wife as I did and talk about the increase in home invasions...garage entries...carjackings...parking lot incidents/kidnappings, etc.

It's sobering to realize the BGs will always have access to firearms...the good part is that you can protect yourselves. Our outstanding instructor (27 yrs Dallas PD, SWAT leader, Head Instructor and Armourer); I've never seen in print John that it is the sole responsbility of any Officer to protect just you.

After some visits to the range, and talking with some gun shop owners and a DPD officer friend...my wife has her CHL and practices with me each week. In fact, she outshoots me regularily....eventhough I've been shooting long as when I was 11 years old!

Again welcome SHU...their are some extremely knowledgeable people on the Forum ...male and female....take it all in!

I agree with that which has been posted. As far as the wife is concerned many of us have been there. Just give her time and understanding and show her you are safe with your weapon and are learning all about the law. Sometimes, some close to us have an opinion of guns and self-defense. You may have to help her see that you, like us, are not wanting to kill anyone. You simply want to be able to "STOP" any person that tries to hurt you or them. Death is the least desirable outcome for everyone and is not the outcome in most situations where handguns are involved. You have a desire, I'll guess, to help others avoid the worst of humanity when they do their evil. So, you may have to overcome years of possible brainwashing and media influenced propaganda that has convinced her it's wrong. It is not in my opinion. It is a great responsibility and burden that you must choose and continue to choose to take up as you seek more knowledge in the law and others personal experiences. I wish you luck and hope to read more from you here and at PDO.

Ok its not that she doenst approve of it, it is that she doesnt see the need for it. She is in grad school at OLLU in San Antonio wich is not the best part of town. I get worried everytime she goes to school she goes at night. I would pick her up but I commute to austin everyday and work at night also. Im trying to find her an alternative because I know you cant carry on campus which she wouldnt carry untill I convince her. Im going to by some pepper spray though is there diffrent kinds I dont want to get her a cheap spray.

Thank yall for welcoming me with open arms.

Your best bet for nonlethal defense is a high powered Surefire flashlight and some OC spray. I would recommend this light. It can be found at many outdoors stores and some gun shops. Its cheap and can be upgraded to a 120 lumen bulb for $25. This light, at night, can give temporary blindness to an attacker. It overloads the light sensors in the eye and gives them night blindness. Some can be affected for up to 15min. Then, once they are blinded, hit 'em with a stream of OC. Make sure you get one that streams and doesn't fog. With a stream its easier to avoid blowback. She may get some on her, but they will get a lot more. Then she is free to run for help with little chance of being followed. Also be sure that it is actually OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) spray. This is the main ingredient in peppers. Its what makes Jalapeno peppers taste good and Habaneros unbearable. And stay away from anything that says "Mace". It is not Mace and you are paying a company to lie to you. Only officers and correctional facility gaurds and the like are able to use real Mace. You can be arrested if you are ever found with real Mace.
Be sure to tell her to get both items out at the same time and shake the OC while using the flashlight. The particles are not soluble and will settle if unmoved for a long time. The shaking mixes them up again to deliver the full effect. If this is not done, she may very well give her attacker a very refreshing and pleasant feeling shower. It is actually quite revitalizing if the OC contents has settled to the bottom. This is a good reason to keep some on her keychain. We all know how much those get moved around and shaken all day.

Stay safe man. I think you're really going to like it here.

Pick up some Fox lab spray for your lady. Comp-tac is the best place to buy it. Order it today and you will have it later in the week (They are a Texas company).

http://www.comp-tac.com

My wife is in the same situation and carries it daily.

I got Fox spray for the whole family at J & L Self Defense Products http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/sprays.htm

I like their policy that if you ever have to use it, file a police report and mail a copy to them and they will replace your spray for free.
