The general consensus on the SigForum is that Packing.org is slowly dying from too much success combined with too little time by the owner to maintain it. One of the member of SigForum has started an alternative site that seems to be up much more of the time and seems accurate from what I know. It can be found here: http://www.handgunlaw.us/.

The owner of packing.org started law school and said he would have little time to keep the site up.

He actually did pop back in recently, leaving notice that the problem had been a bad RAID card in the server, but that was fixed. And now, a couple of weeks later, it's down again. It's been several days now.

He also said he pays hundreds of dollars a month for the server, which I'm not buying. While it's a high traffic site, it's almost all text. It's not bandwidth intensive at all. A fast colocated server at that level shouldn't be over $50 a month. And at the level of service he's getting, it should be free!
