and I'd think the girl's parents would like to know where she's going and with whom; especially, if she's still living at home and off her parents.

When she lived at home, my daughter was required to have the boy meet me before going out. After the initial meet and greet, she'd get me aside and ask: "Well?" I'd give a thumbs up (guy has potential) or thumbs down (you're wasting your time, but have a nice date).
In the latter case, I'd usually get a : "Daaaad!"
Then, a couple days or a week later, she'd say: "How'd you know?"
All her dates knew the line of work I was in, so they kind of self screened and none of them were of a type I wouldn't let her go out the door with.
