Safety in DC
I've been to the District. I think they overestimated.

Re: Safety in DC
I have a buddy that lost an arm in DC. He was on the edge of the "safe zone" and reached across to flip a light switch and brought back a nub.

Our present plans are to serve as Park Hosts in Virginia's Grayson Highlands SP in October and then move across the state to visit/tour our nation's capital the first week in November.

Re: Safety in DC
Things are way different there from when Teddy Roosevelt used to ride his horse in Rock Creek Park and take potshots at targets of opportunity with his pistol.

Re: Safety in DC
For a place that banned guns for safety reasons, they sure ended up with a place that mostly isn't very safe. An that is on top of LEOs over all stripe nearly tripping over one another.
We toured from Cherry Hill RV park. There was a bus that took us right from the RV park to the train station, where we transferred to the "hop on,hop off" bus. It was a great way to get around and we felt fairly safe as long as we were on that bus.
In the tourist areas around the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington, the National Cathedral, and the Capitol itself, there doesn't seem to be an issue. Beyond that, I don't even consider the cabs safe.

We're excited about the trip and thanks for the tip on Cherry Hill RV Park; however:chasfm11 wrote:For a place that banned guns for safety reasons, they sure ended up with a place that mostly isn't very safe. An that is on top of LEOs over all stripe nearly tripping over one another.

1. It's in Maryland without Texas CHL reciprocity and,
2. Cherry Hill RV Park is too expensive.
We'll stay, and spend our money, in gun friendly Virginia.
Re: Safety in DC
I could not get too excited about a Maryland park since, within a couple of miles, we were going to be in D.C. and their gun ban anyway. Whether we just happened to hit at the right time or not, the rate at Cherry Hill wasn't all that high and the customer service couldn't have been better. They are one of the only parks that will give you your money back if you decide to leave early, not questions asked.Oldgringo wrote: We'll stay, and spend our money, in gun friendly Virginia.
Besides, I'll take MD over NJ any day - and we occasionally HAVE to go there.
Our next trip is going to include lots of time in PA, VA, NC, and SC - all of them honor the Texas CHL.

I used to fly in and out of NJ during the construction of the WTC's back in the late 60's. The WTC floor panels were being assembled in Cartaret, NJ. I left nothing in either NJ or NYC.chasfm11 wrote:I could not get too excited about a Maryland park since, within a couple of miles, we were going to be in D.C. and their gun ban anyway. We would like to tour the Gettysburg battlefied even though I didn't care much for the way that turned out.
Re: Safety in DC
We did that a couple of years ago. Like the other National Battlefields, they have a self-guided CD tour. It is great because it lets you work at your leisure but supplies a lot of information about what you are seeing. We did a similar tour a Vicksburg.Oldgringo wrote: We would like to tour the Gettysburg battlefield even though I didn't care much for the way that turned out.
I'd recommend Artillery Ridge CG. Drummer Boy CG used to be great but it changed hands and it has been all downhill since.
As far as the outcome, I knew that it was Pickett's charge that lost the battle. I didn't realize before the tour that it was done on Lee's command.
