12 year old arrested in Odessa

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

12 year old brings unloaded .22 handgun to school for show and tell and you already know the rest. Zero tolerance strikes again.

I am going to homeschool my hypothetical children.
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

LOL

Wish I knew if these were the parents weapons and they were not secrued or if they came from 'other' sources?

I must admit to being a little bit surprised that it was an actual handgun, rather than a picture of one drawn in crayon, or a finger, or something...

In the four years that I was in the 6th grade I already had a single shot 22lr and a 22 revolver. I was taught respect for weapons, would never take them out without my father’s permission and would face certain death if I did.

Is this a rural school?

So the child parent's failed him in instilling a basic firearms education and understanding of right and wrong,, He is now, or likely will be a convected felon at age,, what 12? For the crime of show and tell. ( no ammo found no malicious intent discovered).. I'd submit, it is the parents that should be prosecuted for the crime, of failure to be a parent. Third degree Stupid, with sentencing to include 2nd degree ass kicking

A bit OT, but in English law 10 years old is the age of responsibility. Younger than that and the parents can be prosecuted for any crimes committed by their children.

Just another situation that could have been avoided by sitting down and talking to you kids. :banghead:
I have a daughter that is very active in the shooting sports, and goes with me to the range all the time. Everyone always watches her carefully, as they don't know if she'll be a safety risk. In the end, she schools most of them, and has pointed out plenty of others unsafe behaviors to the range master and myself.
If you teach you child values, they will have values. If you teach them responsibility, they will be responsible. If you teach them gun safety, they will be safe with guns. I don't get why it's so hard to understand. In the end, this child will have to live with a blemished record, because of a parents shortcomings. :banghead:

The only thing good I can say about all of this... No one was physically harmed. In the end, that is what matters in a situation like this. :tiphat:

Is your real name Jethro Bodine?

Even through I grew up in Chicago, I had access to guns at an early age. My 8th grade graduation present was a Colt Diamondback .22 with a 2 1/2" barrel - I was 13, just one year older than the kid in the story. I'd been shooting for a number of years, but this was "my" first handgun.

But it never occured to me to take one to school.

I'm reading an awful lot of stuff these days of kids doing really stupid things . . . I mean, even stupid for kids. Maybe they're putting something in the water?
