"Rifle team{AF} suffers first loss of the season

AF vs UTEP Match Highlights

Nov. 1, 2006

On Oct 21, the Air Force Academy rifle team competed against UTEP in El Paso, Texas. The Falcons lost the match 4558-4519. Although the team had the loss, the Falcons did set 10 personal records. Senior Jessica Palomba shot a perfect string of 100x100, the only perfect score shot in the entire match. Palomba placed second in the air rifle and third in the smallbore event. Sophomore Brian Jarrell placed fourth in air rifle, while teammate Daniel Cannard tied for fifth place in air rifle.

USAFA Personal Records: Personal-record setters include Palomba with a 584 in air rifle. The score tied her personal best. Junior Justin Raines shot a 550 in smallbore. Sophomores Cannard shot a 570 in air rifle, while Jarrell had a 568 in smallbore. AFA's freshmen Chris Aguilar shot a 561, Chris Allen shot a 523, Tyler Gross had a 566, and Kristen Smith finished with a 515 in air rifle. In smallbore, freshman Jon Stephenson shot a 508.

"The first match gave us a good idea of where we're going and also helped the new shooters feel good about our future. We adjusted well, saw a lot of good shooting and we're looking forward to coming on strong the rest of the season," said Jarrell.

The Falcons' next competition is against the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Friday, Nov. 3 at West Point, N.Y. "

Wow - I did not know that UTEP had a rifle team and I am from El Paso (don't live there anymore). I know this is off the point of your post but UTEP seems to be improving in all sports. The other night they beat a real good Div II basketball team. Before you know it they will be in the BCS (not this year).
