I assume that they are going to WalMart to buy ammo as it usually has the best prices.

Just a rite of passage. Sooner or later everyone goes through there. It's just that for most of us, we need to go there anyway.

WalMart (in Texas, at least) isn't posted, it's usually pretty crowded, AND they sell ammo in the back of the store. Thus, it's a good first place to go when you get your plastic, to "get your feet wet" in public as it were.

Sometimes folks go through a wee bit of "stage fright" or self-consciousness when they first carry in public: "Is it printing?" "Will anyone notice?" No matter how carefully you dress, you can feel like everyone is staring at that new lump under your shirt/waistband/belt, that is so very obvious to you. And if it feels that large and obvious to you, then naturally, it must be obvious to everyone around you, right? ("Mommy, why does that man have a big lump on his side?" "Shush, dear, it's not polite to stare." )

Walking through a crowded WalMart to get to the ammo counter in the back (or, just wandering around) is a good way to teach your subconscious that the world isn't staring at "that lump" and divining what it is. In fact, the folks are pretty much oblivious to your very presence there, except as something in their way in a crowded aisle. It's a good confidence builder.

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

That is one heck of a well thought out answer, and much better that my reason.

My reasoning has always been just because. You have to carry now that you can, and you know you can find something at walmart that you need.
