S&W Scandium 360PD range report

I just picked up a S&W 360PD last week, and looking forward to shooting it soon (with .357 mag rounds ). Just wondering if any other scandium fans were out there

I have and carry a M&P340 in .357, which is basically the same as your pistol, but with the enclosed hammer like on a 642. Mine has the same tritium night sight as yours - which is very good, by the way.

I really like my little pistol, and I carry it frequently (it's in my left front pocket as I write this). And it's really not that bad to shoot, even with full-house .357 loads. I carry Hornady Critical Defense 125 grain .357 ammo in it.

Per Hornady, that load gets 1200 fps and 400 ft-lb out of a 2" barrel.

I carry and shoot a 340PD. I also had the Scandium 1911 and loved it.

Shooting .357 out of those must be a real handful. +P from my LCR is plenty, and I'm actually leaning towards standard pressure rounds since I shoot them better. Granted, I don't have a lot of experience with handguns yet, I'm sure more power can be handled well with more practice.

If you can be a fan of an element, then I'm a scandium fan. I just don't own one yet. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

It seems like an ideal pocket gun to me. I am old-fashioned and like hammers on revolvers. Be sure to give a range report with the evil .357 Mag rounds. It ought to be a bit snappy.

My "always" gun is an S&W 340Sc, and my carry load is the Winchester 145 gr Silvertip Hollowpoint .357.

I added Crimson Trace lasergrips - the type that cover the backstrap with a bit of rubber. That extra cushioning makes shooting the little gun with .357s merely unpleasant, rather than painful. (At least for a couple of cylinders full.)

It is snappy, but I find that it just isn't as terrible as people fear it would be. I can shoot 5 quick rounds of the Critical Defense ammo, and yes, my palm stings a bit, but it doesn't actually hurt. But I have kind of fleshy hands. If you have bony hands, it might get uncomfortable. Mine just has the abbreviated boot grips on it.

As the others noted - the 360PD (and similar) are hand smackers. I also did as also noted - added the CT grips for a little extra cushion. I have found the gun a little unpleasant but not unmanageable with .357 loads. The ease of carrying, concealability in almost any mode of dress, power of an excellent round, and the reliability - kinda offsets the bad things. I don't shoot it (the 360) much, just when I am swapping out for fresh ammunition and need to practice with it - othertimes, that is why I got that 686 off of you.

I'm a fan of hammers too, I like the ability to SA a shot if need be.

Speaking of being a fan of the element, the atom design on the side of the gun has 21 electrons in the orbital paths, which a quick look at a periodic table says it's a scandium atom. Someone at S&W must know their chemistry

That's good to hear. All I've read about is how brutal it is. Though, I heard the same thing about small 10mm's with full throttle loads, and I don't have an issue with my G29 as far as recoil goes, I don't think it has ALL that much recoil to be honest.

Do you know of a .357 magnum pistol/revolver (or something of similar power) that weighs less than 11.4oz? If so, I would like to know about it.

nope all my guns are semi automatics.i have 3 scanadium frame guns and about to buy another.i never had a problem with any of them.they are all smith and wesson tho.

That is what I got for my wife. She loves it because it is light.

I "borrow" it when I go to the range. It is not the most comfortable gun in the world to fire, but it is not as bad as I expected it to be.

1911PD here. Nice piece, easy to carry and fun to shoot.

Well, I got out to the range on saturday morning to test out the 360 or "Scandie" as I call her.

Issues: None, no fail to fire, cases ejected easialy and fully with a quick rap on the ejector rod, shot a little high, but I think that was me.

Feel Impressions: I really like the gun, it fits well in my hands and points naturally on target. And at ~13oz loaded, is almost un-noticeable when carrying.

Shooting Impressions: All I bought was .357 mag rounds to the range and was a smattering of the following

Reminton UMC 125gr SP
Federal Barnes expander 140gr HP
Hornady 125 gr. Critical defense
Hornady 140gr Leveroution.
Hornady 125gr. XTP HP

None exhibited bullet unseating in the slightest, I liked the Federal and Leveroution the best, Scandie liked the heavier bullets more for some reason.

The recoil can only be described as brutal with full throttle .357 loads. My hand was still tingling hours after I left the range. The person who I was with wanted to shoot it, and the exclamation cannot be quoted due to forum rules The same person shot my G29 with DT 10mm rounds after Scandie and I quote "the recoil is pretty low!" To me the 10mm felt like a mid 9mm in comparison (when compared to the 360)

All in all I put about 50 rounds downrange my fingers ached, my wrist ached my elbow ached and I was bleeding, all in all a great day at the range!

I then switched to the P556 and "foomed" through a couple boxes for fun.
