Tula 9mm ammo range report

Today, I stopped by at walmart to grab some 9mm before heading to Dallas Pistol Club for a Personal Protection match. At the ammo cabinet, there was 2 small box of Tula steel cased, 50 rd of FMJ at $9.47 and a dozen or so of Federal 9mm, brass cased FMJ at $10.47. I asked to pick the 2 Tula boxes and 4 Federal boxes. I never shot that ammo before and no harm in trying.

At the match, which was a blast by the way, I only loaded the steel cased Tula and my HK P30 digested them with not single hitch. Later tonight I will clean up my pistol and see if they are more nasty than what I was shooting (Federal).

Other than cleanliness, what are your thoughts on the Tula ammo. Is it safe to shoot etc. Cost seems very reasonable for practice rounds

Of course, it shoots just fine. However, as with any ammo regardless of the source, one can't over look the importance to watch for dudes and squibs.
I was more accurate with this ammo. I do not have results yet for ranking. However, I did not have a single failure to neutralized a target nor hitting an innocent hostage. This match had even a full stage of head shots only behind good guys. I am sure if it was me or the ammo. Definitely I shot better than previous matches.

I never shot low cost steel cased rounds before, however, this ammo acted as it should each time it goes bang, no jams, no failure to feed or failure to eject.

The other ammo that I would like to try are Seller & Bellots.

I cleaned my P30.

Surprisingly, there was barely any gunpowder residue on the slide or the frame. I sprayed some Rem Oil and let sit while I was cleaning the barrel. On the barrel, there was a black soot but it came off easily. After using some Rem bore oil and some Hoppe 9 bore cleaner and some Nitro solvent from Ottis, and after some 8-9 patches, the barrel came back shining like a mirror.

True I only shot 82 rds of this ammo, but I guess those ammo were using a clean burning powder.

Conclusion: I highly recommend this ammo for range duty

Thanks Beiurty for the update. Looks as if Terryg is yankin your chain but I think you're above that? I think I'll try some since the cost looks good and the wife and me shoot about 150 rounds each per week. So, again thanks for the update and information.

$2 more in my pocket that exactly what I over spent more at the club lounge, $15 match fee and $2 for 3 can of Soda, 1 Ice cream sandwich bar. We are even.

I'm going to have to check up on WallyWorld ammo prices round our way. Last time I bought any, Federal was $8.97 in Amarillo, $9.97 out in the sticks. Never seen any Tula, but our local stores did have that Swiss 124 grain stuff, started out around $16 but the price kept creeping down, was around $12 last I saw.

Cabelas recently had a sale on Tula .223. I eventually bought several hundred rounds and shot it in my Mini-14 and also found that it was completely reliable and VERY clean. Cleaner than many domestic brands and MUCH cleaner that any Wolf.

In the first few boxes of Tula 9mm I had bought, I had a squib load that lodged the projectile so firmly in the barrel it had to be pounded out with a hammer and rod.

The situation was immediately recognized so inconvenience was the only consequence, but someone who used the situation as an opportunity to execute a tap / rack / bang malfunction drill would have had a very bad day.

I've fired many thousands of rounds of Wolf ammo with nothing even close to this experience. It's dirty, but it goes bang every time and I clean after every range session.

The squib load could have been a one in a trillion anomaly, but it was the end of Tula ammo for me.

I've shot about a box of Tula 9mm with no issues, seems good enough that I would use it again.

Ex, wouldn't it have to have been a total double feed to have been 'dangerous'?
