WTB 28" 12ga O/U - Budget ~$500

Post by cyphur »

I know it is a pretty specific request, but its what I have my heart set on. I'm a sucker for O/U's, and this one is the best bang for the buck that I've found, that feels like an extension of my body(like all firearms should).

Let me know if you where I can find a deal on one, or if you have one that is Like-New, great. Not looking to spend more than $450-500.

I know you said you've got your heart set on, but please research further before buying one. When I was researching affordable O/U's, I came across reports of problems with the Mossberg. I'd have to look again, but I recall problems developing with the action after just a short while.

I decided on a Lanber. Great gun and fantastic bargain. DEFINITELY more bang for your buck than the Mossberg.

If you live near Houston, Carter Country had one on sale for, I think, $529. CDNN currently has two models, $589 and $549.

Spanish made, very popular in Britain and Australia.

I'll look again for the problem report I found previously.

Don't rush into buying a Mossberg.

Please go to http://www.shotgunworld.com and search for "mono block monoblock" in regards to the Mossberg Silver Reserve.

I'll include just a couple of posts so you'll know I'm not making it up.

You will also find posts where people are satisfied with their S/R's.

Too much risk to suit me.

"The monoblock denting is not an alleged problem it is a known fact. Why reccomend a shotgun to a guy without letting them know of the problems associated with the model they are looking at. Sure every firearm manufacture has a lemon now and then but the majority of the silver reserve line are lemons. Mossberg makes a great number of reliable and affordable firearms, however the silver reserve isn't one of them. However if you do own one they do offer great customer service."

"The monoblock denting on the Silver Reserve is a design defect that affects all of these guns. The lower firing pin will collide with the monoblock if the action is closed after dry firing. Once is all it takes. The top lever must be held to the right when closing the action after a dry fire. I personally spoke to Mossberg service and they do not always view the denting as covered by the warranty. "

I appreciate the advice! Thats why I love this forum.

I don't have my heart set on a brand, moreso an O/U. I've handled/shot a handful of them, shoot a Beretta 686S when I go shooting with my father, have shot a yildiz, and have handled the Mossberg and the Baikal-made Remington SPR310. Aside from the Beretta, the Mossberg felt the most natural.

I'll have to make some calls and see if there are any up here in Dallas that I can get my hands on, I'd like to handle it prior to purchase.

I would agree with the Lanber also. I have had one for about 2 yrs now and have probably 4,000 rnds thru it without a problem. For the money the Lanbers are good choices. If you plan on shooting this gun alot i.e. 10-15k a year I might think more along the lines of something else, but only because getting some one to work on the lanbers could be problematic. Do go to Shotgun world website and read the forums there...lots of good info.

unless someone hires me to shoot competitions, I'd be lucky to shoot 750 rounds in a year through it. Quite lucky indeed.

Hence why I'm not buying a Beretta or a Browning - can't justify the cost.

I've heard very good things about the Russian O/U shotguns currently being imported. You might want to look closely at anything labeled Baikal or Khan.

Remington imports Baikal under their SPR line, the 12ga over-under is labeled the SPR310.

While it is by all means a nice gun, it just doesn't feel as natural to me - the foregrip is shaped differently than I would like. If I could swap out the foregrip I'd buy one in a heart beat.

If you look at a Beretta, a Mossberg, and the Lanber, the foregrips have a bit of a lip on the end of the foregrip, it has a mold to it. Whereas the Baikal and a few others, do not. The Stoeger(made/imported? by Beretta) is a real nice O/U as well, but I do not like its foregrip release mechanism.

Well, thanks for the input so far, but things have taken a little turn, so I'm goign to have to put the shotgun on hold for now.

However the black rifle project continues....

Going to Market Hall show early on Saturday. Have a Stoeger 12 ga O/U at a very reasonable price (about half your budget).

I won't bring it unless you contact me by pm.
