Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe

Post by rmr1923 »

my paperwork is still being processed so my plastic isn't in just yet, but i've got a question for those of you who have experience using the Crossbreed Supertuck holster. once my plastic is in the mail i'll be shopping around for a new concealed carry gun (my wife has officially commandeered my PX4 subcompact and i have no objections as we've had trouble finding a handgun that she feels more comfortable with than the PX4 SC). i'm pretty settled on either getting a Glock 23 or 27. i've seen from youtube reviews of the Crossbreed Supertuck that you can fit multiple Glock models in the same holster because many of them are (in general) roughly the same dimensions in the area that sits in the holster. i also have a full-size Springfield XDm .40 and i was wondering if anyone has ever tried to fit an XD in a Supertuck holster that's designed for one of the Glock models. i didn't think to compare the XD to the Glock while i was at the store the other day, but by looking at pictures online they appear to be roughly the same shape. any thoughts? obviously i'd prefer to carry a compact or subcompact, especially during those hot summer months, but i'm pretty proficient with my XDm and when the weather calls for a heavy coat, i'd like to be able to carry that XDm if i can use the same holster.

of course the XDm came with a paddle holster that sits OWB, but due to my slim(ish) figure i've found it hard to conceal even with a heavy coat over it

I carried a supertuck for a year and a half with a taurus pt111. It is a great holster and i have no complaints. I just switched over to the G26 and i ordered a comptac minotaur for it. From everything ive heard the two holsters are very equal, I just had to find out for myself. The minotaur allows you to switch the kydex bodies for different models (like switching from glock to xd) without the cost of replacing the whole holster. This may be an option you want to look at. My minotaur should come tomorrow and i will post how it is going.

thanks, i've also seen the minotaur holsters and was wondering how they compared to the crossbreed supertuck. i was kind of surprised to see that the kydex on the crossbreed can't be swapped out, so the comptac seems appealing considering that i might swap between 2 or 3 different guns depending on what the situation dictates.

I carry a Springfield XD9sub compact with a Crossbreed minituck IWB.
Conceals great!
I would only suggest that you do spend the extra $10 or $15 for the horsehide

For IWB, I wear my Kholster far more often than my Crossbreed Supertuck or Mini Tuck. The larger leather backing on the Kholster is very comfortable and keeps those agressive grips from sanding away at my hide. :thumbs2:

me too

Kholster the most ... though I changed clips to CompTac's

then Comfort Carry by Rob Durham (uses CompTac clips) if I want horsehide next to me, it takes the longest to "break in" but is well made,

or Desantis Tuck This 2 when I want a spare mag and a smaller package with no leather

Those are the 3 I wear the most, out of the suitcase full I own

I carry both the Crossbreed Supertuck and the Comp-Tac Minotaur (depending on which gun) and strongly like both holsters.

They are both very comfortable and do a nice job. In my opinion, the Com-Tac is clearly superior construction of the leather portion and the kydex body is clearly stronger construction.

If you read enough on the various gun forums, you will find that the main complaint people have regarding the Crossbreed is the kydex shell will crack. Many of these messages are also lauding about how their shell cracked and Crossbreed fixed it under their lifetime warranty. When my kydex shell cracked and I called Crossbreed, however, they were happy to repair the holster if I sent it in with a copy of my receipt.

The Comp-Tac only offers a 1 year warranty, however. Since the belt clips are metal on the Crossbreed, but plastic on the Comp-Tac, they have different strengths and weaknesses. On the Comp-Tac, I am wondering how long the plastic belt clips will last before they break, but they are working fine right now. On the Crossbreed, I have a number of nice (read expensive) gun belts that have little scratches and scuffs in the leather from the metal clips.

The other complaint people have about the Comp-Tac Minotaur is the whole issue of replaceable kydex shells on the same leather body. Apparently, Comp-Tac changed construction of the Minotaur shells last spring, and the new design is not backward compatible with the old product. There are people that feel like Comp-Tac had an implicit promise of interchangeable kydex shells when they bought their holster, and now they have the "old style" holsters that cannot be switched. They have definitely irritated a portion of their installed base.

Overall, if I was buying another holster tonight, I would purchase another Comp-Tac before I would purchase another Crossbreed.

I worried about CompTac clip strength ... the Velcro clips are almost impossible to remove from the Velcro on the belt (holds position well, very secure) but none ever broke yet in a year, they flex a bit, none broken yet.

Also, I've slept on a hard floor for a year(back issues) wearing an all kydex holster with the standard CompTac clip none broke, but a bit uncomfortable rolling over "rlol"

Why get a Glock when you can get either a subcompact XD or one of the new compact XDMs?

Just curious.

Either are good, but with a Glock you can post comments on anti-gun sites about your Glock has yet to jump out and bite anyone and watch them all get in an uproar about how Glocks are evil
I was thinking about getting the XD myself, but probably getting another Glock, just cause
I might get the XD some day, they are great, but it's fun reading how Glock sales skyrocketed right now.
(Really because already have a 26 I carry daily and I want twins, then I can use either, toss one to a CHL freind, and toss a spare mag to him if needed)

rmr1923 , you already have an XD, you're familiar with XD ... I don't know a lot, but if you got another smaller one, couldn't you use the longer mags for "hi capacity" spares? If you are confident in XDs, why change horses?

Just curious too

honestly i'm still strongly considering the compact XDm 40. my first impression when i stopped by the store last week was that the Glock 27 just felt more comfortable and "natural" in my hand, but that one already had the Pearce mag extension installed so i didn't get to see what it felt like with just the standard-length mag.

i've been looking into the compact XDm and it comes with an 11-roung mag and a spare 19 round mag - which is more than the 16 rounds that my full-size holds. not sure if my full-size mags will work in the compact but that would be a nice added benefit if they do. i also would be willing to bet that both the compact and full-size XDm might fit in the same IWB holster, so that may influence my decision a little bit too. i'm not a big fan of external safeties (which is why i'm not hesitating to let my wife take my Beretta, the ambidextrous safety tends to get snagged on the holster and clothing fairly easily), but i do like the palm safety on my Springfield, just a little added peace of mind.

looks like i may have just talked myself into getting the Springfield now.. lol. more than anything i want to find a gun range that has both that i can test out, just to see which one feels better when it's being fired. ultimately it's going to come down to which gun i feel more comfortable shooting.

As far as the holsters go, I was looking at the Comp-Tac Minotaur and the Crossbreed as well. They seemed very equal, but I went with the Comp-Tac. Don't know if XD and Glock are interchangeable, but I do know that my holster fits all Glock 9/40/357, so whether it's full, compact or sub it all fits. They do have a completely separate holster for the XD, but I think it is interchangeable between all XD sizes and calibers as well. Also, Comp-Tac is in Spring, so I like the fact that they are a local company. I bought mine at Collectors Firearms over on your side of town. They had a huge selection there. Go check them out.

As far as renting the guns, come down to The Arms Room in League City. They are great and very reasonably priced for renting. Rental of the gun is $10, lane charge is $10/hour and you have to buy their ammo if you shoot their gun so a box of ammo was $15.

i wasn't aware that Comp-Tac was located in Spring, do they have an outlet store or anything like that up there? i'm headed up to the Woodlands later this week for a work seminar (yawn) but might stop by to check them out if they do have a store. Collector's Firearms is about a 10 minute drive from where i live so i can always go look at the holsters there too.

i'm trying to get Memorial Shooting Center to call me back about gun rentals, that's where we did the shooting proficiency test in my CHL class and i asked them about gun rentals while we were there. they said $12 and we had to buy their ammo, and could swap out different models of the same caliber for that one fee. i think their lane fee is $15 an hour so i didn't ask if i had to pay that on top of the $12, but if they have the G27 and XDm 40 subcompacts then i'll just pay the slightly higher price (League City is a bit of a drive for me).
