Magazine Clips
the clip I had on a rifle clipped onto the rear of the cartridges, but didn't enclose them in a surrounding carrier,
the magazines in my pistols fully enclose the cartridges, the magazines for my other rifles do too, like for an AK-47, SKS, Glock, etc etc

Re: Magazine Clips
The top one is a stripper clip, which can be used to charge a magazine on some rifles, and inserted into the magazine on some other rifles.
The bottom one is an en-bloc clip, which is inserted completely into the rifle's magazine - as in a M1 Garand.
My M1A came with a stripper clip guide on the receiver, even though it has a removable box magazine - the idea being that you could recharge the magazine while still inserted in the rifle.

Re: Magazine Clips
A CLIP holds things together.
A MAGAZINE is either a periodical (Guns and Ammo, Newsweek, etc.) or, a place where ammunition is stored ready for use. Rifles, pistols, warships, etc. all have magazines.
The "stripper clip" is more appropriately called a "charger" (British usage) that thing you shove into an M1 Rifle is a true "clip"
FWIW I call 'em stripper clips too.

Re: Magazine Clips
I've learned that a magazine is a box that usually inserts into the weapon from the bottom. There are exceptions that are attached in the side or top. A clip is a device that does not fully enclose the ammo, just holds a few rounds together, and is inserted into the gun from the top. Sometimes, the clip is a throwaway device that just simplifies putting the ammo into the weapon - like that stripper clip.
Re: Magazine Clips
Magazines hold ammunition. Although in some cases clips are used to feed the ammo into the magazine.
Not all magazines are removable either. The tube along the bottom of a lever action rifle is a magazine, as is the tube on the bottom of a shotgun. Many bolt-action rifles have a little space under the bolt where you can stuff 3 to 5 extra rounds. That's also a magazine.
This picture cracks me up for some reason.

Re: Magazine Clips
Would be interesting if someone would write a book on the nomenclature of firearms and how the terms are used in popular culture. It seems that it takes generations for terms to take hold and then they never seem to go away. For example, the term "clip" probably came into general use around the time semi-automatics entered the mainstream (+/- WWII). Later, those used to charge AR/AK type magazines generally held 10 rounds each. This was probably because increments of 10 are easy to inventory and a higher number would have been unwieldy. This number of 10 has evolved into "normal capacity" for much of the public unfamiliar with firearms although it has little bearing on the actual capacity of firearms. Before the advent of double-stack magazines, most semi-automatics carried 6-8 rounds. When manufacturers made the jump to double-stacks, normal capacity became more like 12-30.
Just thinking out loud.

But that would give everyone an opportunity to debate everything they think is wrong in the book.Lodge2004 wrote:Would be interesting if someone would write a book on the nomenclature of firearms and how the terms are used in popular culture.

Re: Magazine Clips
That might be interesting, especially from a sociology point of view. We have quite a few terms that are commonly used and some people do not even know it came from firearms - like using the term "lock, stock, and barrel" for meaning the whole thing or all of something.Lodge2004 wrote:Would be interesting if someone would write a book on the nomenclature of firearms and how the terms are used in popular culture.

A magazine is a device that holds and feeds ammunition. Most repeating firearms have a magazine.PostShooter wrote:I've learned that a magazine is a box that usually inserts into the weapon from the bottom. A clip is a device that is used to charge a (usually integral but sometimes detachable) magazine.

What about those gadgets to clip two M16 magazines together?
