Another Newbie
Hey Guys just wanted to throw this out there and see what kind of response I get. I'm 20 year old student at UNT and in 6 months I'll be looking to start my CHL classes (found out I can take them prior to turning 21). Any advice y'all can give me before I start or steps I need to take? Also any particular CHL classes I should go to/recommend.
Thanks! Josh

Thanks! Josh

There are some UNT peoples here on the forum, and some from your area, they'll probably chime in later, but I wanted to say howdy n welcome

Welcome
I am also from the Denton area and I took my class at Denton County Sports Association http://www.dentoncountysports.com with our own Greybeard
They also rent guns for qualification if you don't have one.

Ya I hear that's a good place. I will have to check it out when I'm able to take classes. How long does it usually take to get all the classes done?
Re: Another Newbie
Texas CHL class is a minimum of 10 hours including range time (by law)jcarlson91 wrote:How long does it usually take to get all the classes done?
Some locations do it over 2 days, some do it in 1 full 10 hour day.
League City, TX

Defensive Concealed Handgun License Class is longer than a Defensive Driving class (as few as six hours) ... but much more interesting.WildBill wrote:By the end of the day it may feel longer.jcarlson91 wrote:Wow I thought it was way longer than that.Teamless wrote:Texas CHL class is a minimum of 10 hours including range time (by law)jcarlson91 wrote:How long does it usually take to get all the classes done?

Re: Another Newbie
So after the class is complete, it takes a few months to process before you can carry? Or you can carry right away just waiting on other paperwork?

After the class, your paperwork (on-line app) is sent to DPS, they review, perform the background checks and whatever else they are required to do. If all goes well, that is, no issues on apps, background check, etc. you will be issued a license to carry concealed. You cannot carry concealed, on or about your person, until you get the card (referred to as "plastic" around here). The only exception is in your vehical under the Motorist Protection Act or "MPA".
you might want to scan the "Waiting Room" threads to see how long folks are waiting now, when I applied it was taking 4-6 months for a lot of people (primarily Harris county), mine got held up because I left something off my finger print cards
Looks like from when DPS received the app to having "plastic" in hand is less than 40 days.

Do you know what can effect whether or not you get your CHL? (speeding tickets or wrecks) May be a stupid question.
But I have MANY of each..
Re: Another Newbie
No question is stupid.
Generally no class c misdemeanor tickets will matter, Felonies and Disorderly Conduct misdemeanor matter.
But disclose every "arrest"
