Navy Laser Sets Ship On Fire
The Maritime Laser Demonstrator, a solid-state laser, aboard the USS Paul Foster off the central California coast fired a 15-kilowatt beam at an inflatable motorboat a mile away as both ships moved through the sea.

thats the perfect weapon to use before boarding a vessel, they stopped the engines and most likely blinded everyone on board

If I suspect a laser I'm just going to coat my ships in mirrors.

Of course, that will make for an easy target for a 5" gun.pcgizzmo wrote:If I suspect a laser I'm just going to coat my ships in mirrors.

That was the cheapest thing the Navy could find to play with their new laser?

I know, huh? I was thinking a Somalian pirate boat.....with the captured pirates shackled to their stations....would be the most realistic training aid.steveincowtown wrote:That was the cheapest thing the Navy could find to play with their new laser?

Wonder if a laser, fired at the hull below water line, could make 2 holes. One reflected up above water line to allow air out, the other below water line to let water in by reflection and refraction splitting the beam. You'd have to line the pool cue up just right for that shot ... but boy would it be fun if possible.

just keep MiniMe away from it...
srsly, I wonder if maritime law states that you have to use the "blue" laser if you're a good guy, and the "red" laser if you're a bad guy...

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
