I agree with Baldeagle and others, given her situation, that she did the right thing by getting out of the car, throwing her "stuff" on the ground, and running. She should have been more aware of what was going on and not assumed that the other vehicle was just "dropping someone off". The area she parks in does not circle the complex. It is a dead end (not good).
Her apartment is located near North Park Mall in Dallas (Cityscape Apartments). I am not sure of the exact location because I have not been there. (I do not go to Dallas if I can help it!)
911 was called and the police did come. Evidently, the gas station where they tried to use the card had video cameras. I understand the police will have to subpoena the video records. Not sure if that is going to happen.
Of some consolation, she did get her purse back. I guess the idiots did not realize what they had and decided to throw it in the ditch. Someone found the purse and it still had my daughter's student ID in it. The person contacted my daughter via Facebook and arrangements were made to return the purse (in a public place).
We are planning a trip to the range in the very near future. She has very little experience with firearms, therefore, we will be starting from scratch. I am looking forward to it. I will keep y'all posted of any new developments in the case.

Thanks again for the support,
Lefty
In addition to your planned range trip, you should bring her to the May 14th get together. She will have the opportunity to shoot many different pistols.

I have no problem doing as much damage as I have to do to get out of the situation, including running them over.
While that is an option, I can only imagine now that the bad guys might freak out and open fire on her to make her stop (damaging the bad guys' own car).

All in all...she did pretty well.

Good move throwing the purse... (maintains distance and creates a distraction). IF her vehicle is equipped with a key fob and alarm, then it would be a good idea to keep the keys (set off the alarm while running away). Just food for thought.

Each circumstance will be different...but I think she did pretty good!

Situational awareness will come more easily for her now. ;-)

I'm glad your daughter came out of the encounter safe physically, if a little shaken up. That's the sort of thing we were worried about at my girlfriend's old apartment, even though some people claimed the intruders bypassing security have pure hearts. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=26904" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Lefty:

That's great that you are going to take your daughter to the range.

She will gain confidence in being able to handle a gun, but another important
part of you training her will be the psychological component of self defense.

She can't look upon her gun as a talisman that, when shown to BG's, will make them
cringe and run away. She has to be ready not just to draw, but to actually shoot someone
before they can charge her and disarm her.

Have her join the forum and converse with the crowd, especially the Ladies' section.

Happy Trails.

Lefty, please ask your daughter if she would be interested in telling this story at one of the Texas Firearms Coalition seminars, or perhaps on video. If she doesn't want to relive it I'll understand, but hearing of this chilling event directly from her will have a far greater impact them anyone else telling it. It may save someone else from going through the same thing.

Charles,
I am more than willing to shoot the interview video and editing. I still have all my lighting equipment and setups for full interviews. My wife worked with a lady at the post office who was attacked years ago in her home in Friendswood by a serial killer, you may remember it, who used the cord from the blinds to strangle the person. she survived but wish I had her story on tape to tell others. It was chilling and the after affects devastating for a very long time to her.

Charles,

My daughter told me she sent you a PM saying she would be willing to make a video. I think the logistics might be problem due to locations.

She and I exchanged emails and we are going to work out something. I appreciate her willingness to do this to help others.

Your Daughter did the right thing for sure, I lived in dallas for the majority of my life and that area she lives in gives off the facade of being a nice safe place. The criminals in dallas know people feel cozy there which is why you see so many robberies that make the dallas news in that area. In the northpark mall a year ago a woman rolled down her window when someone asked for help, the criminal shot her in the head and took the car without hesitation, in broad daylight, in a crowded parking lot.

People do not expect to run into problems there, but is quickly becoming a hotspot. My parents still live near there as well, in a nice neighborhood, my younger brothers car was broken into in broad daylight, in our front driveway, while my mother was home. Hopefully your daughter, like everyone else has said, will keep her situational awareness up.

First I am very happy your daughter was not harmed physically.
And I am quite sure this is one lesson she will not long forget.
And hopefully this will be a lesson for others who read about this crminal assault.
This very type of robbery happens with great regularity here in Houston and greater Harris county Texas.
In fact a man who lived in an upper end neighborhood was murdered a couple of weeks ago by two thugs who followed him back to his home at night after he dropped a DVD off at one of those Red Box kiosks at a nearby drug store.
They wanted his nice car and took his life.
I can't tell you how many appeals I have read in the last couple of years of killers who with other like minded thugs with them drove around just looking for someone "To jack up" in their crude parlance.
Unfortunately a lot of these innocent people lose their lives just because the punk wants to shoot them.
Be very careful folks.

I'm glad your daughter is okay.
