I got an interesting phone call yesterday. Apparently someone in Austin just realized that we instructors have not been getting audited and checked up on. So, they just turned over this responsibility to the regulatory division. They just had a crash course on the laws and what to check on. Be expecting a phone call.

They want to check records and paperwork, certificates, as well as monitor classes for content, time, etc. Very nice lady told me they were not supposed to be bullies, just check up on us.

We were told that they audit pretty much only when there's a complaint by either another instructor or student. They simply don't have the manpower for anything else. The biggest complaint is about the instructors that simply "sell" the license by charging the money, filling out the forms and not really holding any type of class. But if any part of the required sections aren't taught, it can land an instructor in jail.

She actually called because she was given the task of identifying someone in our area that is REALLY pushing the UTAH license. Evidently word had reached Austin. I'm not sure why they couldn't find the info on their own, it was pretty easy to find. She said she Googled for instructors in our area and I popped up at the top. I thought that was funny too since they have a list of instructors with contact info. ?????

Well, if that's the case, if the investigator is in the class when he's "off", then he's going to jail. Until someone can get there, I guess he gets to skate.

Very short classes.

I'm not concerned about my classes. I run a tad long normally, and I try to be the MOST exspensive. No instructor can ever say I undercut their price or teach short classes. My classes are pretty full most of the time too. I guess people like getting what they pay for. I'm VERY tough on them on the range too.

It's not hard to cover all of the DPS material. I'm always puzzled when I hear new instructors saying they have to provide "filler" because they have a hard time meeting the 10 hour minimum. I never have that problem. I always hit my 10 hour minimum, and I do my best to be sure my students get their money's worth.

I had an interesting conversation with a gentleman denigrating the CHL program, saying he received no "training" and was in and out in less than an hour. I informed him that either he was knowingly cheating the system with a complicit instructor, or he was cheated by an instructor, and, either way, the instructor should be reported. If DPS chooses, I informed him, his instructor's certificate would be yanked, along with the CHL of his students. Funny... the conversation was over and the subject was abruptly changed.

I've got no problem with being audited, as long as they're not prejudiced, witch hunting or just knit picking. I support weeding out the cheats. They mess things up for the rest of us.

I'm with you. Sometimes, I have a hard time wrapping it up in 10 hours. And I always leave every class with a "dang, I should have told them about THIS, or THAT".

But, my philosophy is, the mind can only absorb as much as the butt can endure. Last instructor renewal class reminded me just how hard it is to be on the receiving end of this for all day.

So, I talk fast, keep it moving, take very few breaks, answer as many questions as feasible, and try my best to get them out of there in as close to 10 hours as I can make it.

I asked about this when I was up in Georgetown and they told us that former students of someone who got busted would get to keep their license. If it can be proven that the student/students were complicent that's probably another matter.

But if it was my first time and the dude skated through in 5 hours with some shooting, I know I wouldn't have known the difference.

I had a student call me the other day asking about requalifying. He received a letter informing him that his instructor's license had been revoked and he had 90 days to find an instructor and requalify to keep his CHL. Apparently, he only had to redo the shooting portion.
