I mean, since you're not posting budgetary restrictions...

I had just returned from over seas and decided a little combat pay would go twards a "nice" firearm. I had messed up my trigger finger while I was there (dang near lost it) and the .45 was too much for my still healing finger. So I sold it with about 15 rouunds through the tube.

Couple years go by and now the bug bites again. But I dont want to spend $1K+. Heck I hardly want to spend $600.

I'd like some sugestions for a good starter 1911. I've been told Rock Island is okay and under $500, Of course Springfield GI for under $600. What other options are there.

Is there anything about any of the brands that would prevent me from building off of it once I get the hang of the whole 1911 thing?

This would be mostly just for fun at the range.
You missed his budgetary restrictions. Ima hafta confiscate that Wilson Combat on accounta you can't read. :smilelol5:

I have a RIA Tactical in satin nickle. It is my favorite .45 and my daily carry piece. My actual Colt 1911 is a safe queen...

Rock Island is made in the PHILLIPINES by Armscor. I have a gun made by Armscor. It is the worst gun I have ever owned. Argh!

Buy American when you buy guns. You can't go wrong.

Yes, because S&W, Ruger, etc have never had a lemon...or, oh I don't know...a recall because their guns were messed up. ;-)

OP, considering everyone who actually OWNS a Rock Island that has posted on this thread likes them, I think you'll be okay. The other nice thing about RI is they do have a gunsmith in Nevada that works almost exclusively on them so if there is a problem, there is customer support here in the States. I'm considering sending mine, one at a time over to get a few upgrades from him. :tiphat:

Have you contacted the folks at Advanced Tactical who handle the LIFETIME WARRANTY on that firearm?

From previous posts of his, it appears the armscor weapon he probably has is a cheaper made AK lookalike that shoots 22lr. Which obviously has a lot of relevance to our current 1911 discussion. ;-) drjoker, STI uses those amrscor 1911s as the base for their custom line of 1911s. They are a different breed of firearm and quality from your ak knockoff. :tiphat:

+111111111111 on the Rocks. I have 2, one is a compact, the other a full sized and they are both solid, reliable, and accurate. The compact is my usual carry and I have not had one failure with it in thousands of rounds (I've lost track). The full sized is a tactical, 2-toned model and is just as solid. You can't go wrong with the rocks because even if you did have any trouble with it, there's an unconditional lifetime warranty backed by some of the best in the business. Or at least that's what people say, I've never had any occaision to talk to their customer support in nearly 5 years of owning my guns. Great qualtiy, great service, great price. (and no, I don't work for them  ).
