My BIL is currently in PA and his wife will be driving from Texas to join him in PA. They will then drive back together doing some touring on the way. His Texas CHL just arrived and so he wants her to bring his CHL and his gun on the trip.
So she will be driving without a CHL from Texas to PA. It seems harder to find good information on MPA style rules in other states. But my understanding of Federal law is that it is ok for her to have the gun unloaded and packed up while engaging in interstate travel.
Does that sound correct to all of you?

Re: Travel through other States w/o CHL?
Thank you for the reply. However, that is a bit more broad than I was hoping for. Because she does not have a CHL, I am primarily interested in verifying that she would not be breaking the law by transporting the gun unloaded and packed away while traveling from state to state.2up1down wrote:Alan Korwin wrote Texas State Gun Laws which is approved by Texas DPS.

Re: Travel through other States w/o CHL?
What route is being used? I would try to avoid going through Il . Going up through Ar, Tn, and Va looks reasonable in a quick scan of the laws. Most require the weapon to unloaded, locked in the trunk or other container not immediately accessable to the passenger compartment. Some want the ammo separate from the weapon. When they start on their tour on the way back I would avoid, NY, NJ, and Wash DC. and be careful about Maryland. Use that link provided above to confirm what I said. I went through another site that just gave brief summaries and some of it appeared to be incomplete and poorly edited.

Pack it unloaded in the middle of her suitcase. She can drive anywhere with it within the lower 48. Make the most use of interstates. Have a good trip.
