Removable mag fed bolt action .223 or .308
Removable mag fed bolt action .223 or .308
I am shopping around for a bolt action rifle. Something tacticool looking w/heavy barrel and synthetic stock and threaded barrel would be a huge bonus. I have an appreciation for beautiful wood stocks, but don't want them on my gun. I am mainly looking for a precision rifle chambered in a NATO round that would accept a detachable box mag. My hopes are that I can find one that might accept a 20rd/10rd/5rd AR mag or maybe a 20rd/10rd/5rd M1A magazine. My preference is one chambered in 5.56/.223 over .308 due to ammo expense and recoil. I don't plan on hunting with it at all, just punching paper and blasting random object I drag out to my parents property.
My intention is to focus/improve on my basic rifle shooting skills and become proficient at ranging and connecting with targets up to 350yds. I already own a nice Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x that will reside on it so I don't have to factor optics in the mix. I would like to keep the initial purchase under $800

Minus the wood stock, looks like exactly what you're looking for.

I agree and have looked at it and the forward scope mount turns me off a bit. But it doesn't have a heavy barrel.74novaman wrote:http://www.ruger.com/products/gunsiteSc ... odels.html

Wow, that is what I'm looking for. It doesn't mention a threaded barrel but I can work with that. It says its a new rifle from them, I wonder what some reviews will be. Thanks, any others out there that I don't know about? I know a Rem 700 can me modified to accept a detachable box mag, but wanted a ready to run rifle with a warranty.MoJo wrote:Here you go,

Also, Badger Ordnance makes a kit to convert Remington 700 BDL rifles to a removable 10 round box magazine. It's pretty pricey though. So you could buy a Remington 700 PSP and convert it.

Good news is, Badger Ordnance isn't the only game in town anymore. PTG and CDI both make detachable bottom metal that is compatible with Accuracy International magazines and they are WAY more economical than the BO stuff. The Annoyed Man wrote:Also, Badger Ordnance makes a kit to convert Remington 700 BDL rifles to a removable 10 round box magazine. Cool. Thanks for the links. I had been holding off on converting my 700 VSF because of the cost.Carry-a-Kimber wrote:Good news is, Badger Ordnance isn't the only game in town anymore. I'm not sure why you want a threaded barrel but a good gunsmith can thread it for you.

Ooops! I meant 700 SPS, not "PSP."The Annoyed Man wrote:Cool. Thanks for the links. For now to put a comp or brake on, but eventually to host a suppressor.MoJo wrote:I'm not sure why you want a threaded barrel but a good gunsmith can thread it for you.
The MVP looks like what I want, but it is not available. There are only a few reviews online and no reports of new shipments from Mossberg. It will be released some time this year. The Rem 700 is already at the top of my price range and a mag conversion would top it for sure.
I have looked at some CZ models, but they all have pretty wood stocks and have varmint tailored barrels with fast twist rates like 1:12 for .223. Really built for light weight bullets like 40grn or so. That throws the cheap aspect out of shooting .223 out the window.
The Savage models look good, but lack a few features I'm looking for. The trigger and accuracy are there for sure though. I will either wait for the MVP or end up buying a Rem 700 and piecing it together the way I want it.

Re: Removable mag fed bolt action .223 or .308
i just bought a remington 700 in .308. It has threaded barrel from Advanced armorment. mine came with a flash surpressor/brake or you can get it with just threaded barrel.its got 1:10 twist.its pretty heavy rifle.
someone asked why you would want a threaded barrel. well I will be buying a surpressor for mine evenually.

Re: Removable mag fed bolt action .223 or .308
I went to the gun show at Reliant yesterday. I had money in my pocket, but didn't find anything I could not live without. The deals were not all that great. I saw a few used guns priced decent but the finish or the seller was undesirable. I handled several Rem 700s but not exactly what I was looking for. The 700 VTR looks nice but the stock leaves a bit to be desired and the shape of the barrel is odd but looks cool. I also looked at two different 700 XCRs and those are really nice rifles but I could not justify $1000 for that type of weapon if I have no need for it. I did not see a Mossberg MVP and I did not see any desirable CZ rifles.
What I did see and handle was the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle. I had not seen or handled one prior to the show, I think I might be sold on that rifle. The only thing that I have a hang up about is it not being a precision rifle. From reviews I have read it is accurate, but not a tack driver. And that is understandable b/c that is not its purpose, I might just pick one up if I can find a deal on one.

Re: Removable mag fed bolt action .223 or .308
I have a 700 XCR in 7mm-08 and two 700 SPS Tacticals and the $550 rifles will run circles around the $1000 one when it comes to precision accuracy. The XCR is much lighter and a better hunting rifle, but if I want to shoot nice tight groups I pick up one of the SPSs. For the price of the Ruger Gunsite Scout you could get an SPS Tactical, thread the barrel, add new bottom metal, and have a few bucks left for optics. But I still find myself wanting that Ruger.
