New Pistol...

Hi all, I just bought a new pistol for target shooting. Its a Walther P22, Nice little 22 caliber. Its getting too expensive to go and have an afternoon of fun firing the big ammo. With this little guy I got 200 rds for 12 bucks. Plus My little ones are getting old enough to get in on the fun too. Anybody else have one of these? I haven't shot it yet I'm waiting till Friday. Tell yall how it shoots.

Next to a bull-barreled Ruger .22, I bet they are just as fun to shoot...

I don't have a P22, but I do love the way they feel in the hand. I was seriously tempted when they were offering the two barrel "kit", but I held off because they have a reputation for being very finicky about ammo.

That, and the funky mag release. Does the P99 have that same strange "lever"?

No malfunction issues with ours.

The mag release is ambidextrious and on the rear of the trigger guard. The P99's are the same. I believe my HK USP was the same. It does take a little gettin used to.

I just got one to get my wife interested in target shooting. I've got big paws and like the way it feels. We haven't shot it yet, but I expect it'll be plenty of fun.

Plus it was cheaper than Browning and Ruger.

What? only 200 rounds for your 12 bucks? Go to your nearest Walmart and you can find 500+ rounds for that amount of money :)

The P22 is an excellent plinker, good choice!

My P22 was picky about ammo, but not any more so than my other .22LR semi-autos. I think it is just the nature of the beast. But once you find a good ammo (and there are usually many), you're all set.

The mag release is ambi and pretty convenient once you get used to it. Yes, the P99's also have the same.

The Browning Buckmark Camper is about P22's price. But they are different guns, e.g. the Buckmark is SA. The P22 is like a tiny service pistol :)

I'd heard stories about them being picky about ammo too . . .

About a year or two back, a local store had a P22 package - it included a suppressor - for about $850. (Plus tax and the BATmen's tribute for the can.)

That was a typo it was a 525 rd Remington value pack.

If I could only get 9mm ammo that cheap.

We'll see tomorrow how it shoots. It might be rainy and windy so I might have to move indoors.

Did your P22 need to have its sights adjusted the first time you shot it?

I took mine to Bass Pro for the first time this past Saturday and I ran the target out to about 20 feet. I took a few shots and all missed. The freebie targets Bass Pro gives out are small, but dang!

I pulled the target in close, maybe 12 feet and tried again. This time I made a hole on the left edge of the target. I ran it back out to 20 feet, aimed off the target to the right, and hit low-center.

The wife shot it and couldn't hit a darn thing either. I didn't have a small screwdriver to adjust it.

It was not a good experience for the wife since I was just getting her back out to the range for the first time in about 10 years. (My overall evil plan is for her to get a CHL one of these days, but not before being safe and getting proficient with a handgun first). I also made the mistake of using high-velocity ammo, which allowed the little gun to kick pretty good and bark out orange flame! Not a good way to ease her into shooting again.

(By the way, I ran out to the store shelf and bought some sub-sonic ammo, filled a mag, and the first shot went 'pfft' and not much kick. I thought for a second that we were in business, but then realized the little 'pfft' wasn't enough to work the action. Now I've got a fairly expensive air-soft gun.

Any ideas on a brand or velocity that will be enough to work the action, but NOT kick hard and blow flames out the barrel?

Aric, did you get to the range to shoot your P22?

Well I went to the range and shot about 100 rds out of it. It was great It was pretty much center of mass on a 20 ft target. Much better than my glock which is about 1 in off to the right at 20 ft. The only thing about this gun was my fingers got really dirty after I fired it. Is this something about .22 caliber or because it is such a small barrel? I don't have this problem with my Glock 17. Other than that it was fun and cheap. I used 100 rds .22 and 100 rounds of 9mm. 1 was cheap and the other pricey.
