Weapon Parts and Their Availability

Howdy everyone,

I'm just starting an AR 10 build that has been in my plans for some time. I'm noticing that a lot of my intended parts are going out of stock now. I've seen the parts I'm looking for start to sell out all across the mighty interwebs. Not only that, my friend is building an AR 15 and he is having to rethink his plans because Rock River has a lot of parts going on "indefinite backorder" all of a sudden. Lastly I tried to get some new receiver screws for a Winchester 1886 and some nickel controls for my p220, and surprise surprise, all backordered. Is something going on I don't know about? I know its election time soon, but seriously. I mean, the 2008 buying panic didn't precede any new "assault weapons" ban or other successful anti-firearm movement, why should this be any different?

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I in the middle of some weird coincidence?

I can't speak to your situation, but I can say that, across the board, firearms and firearms parts manufacturers are working on backlog orders. Yes, demand is THAT high. I know that Glock's backorder right now is > 150,000 units. Have you tried Brownells/Midway USA? Also, if you send me a PM, I can see if I can find parts through my wholesalers.

It makes sense I suppose. I certainly know Ive increased my "defense budget". Brownells and Midway USA are my first go to places. Thanks for the generous offer. Ill PM soon if any of these things look like they are a lost cause for availability this month.

I have always thought AR-10 stuff was a bit hard to locate. I recently decided on an FNAR instead and haven't looked back.

That might be the best argument for voting for the Republican candidate no matter who it is. If Obama loses in November we should see less panic buying and therefore less shortages in 2013. However, ammo prices will go up if the military-industrial complex convinces a Republican POTUS to keep the shooting war going over there.

That's when hope and change was first promised us......and scared the bejabbers out of most right thinking people.

As far as AR10 parts go, now that I am an AR10 owner, I've had no trouble finding parts. However, AR10s are not like AR15s. One manufacturer's parts are not guaranteed to fit another's. For instance, Rock River Arms .308 rifles don't use the same magazines as other AR10 makers' rifles do. Fortunately (or not...I don't know enough to say), they use the same magazines as FN FALs, so they are relatively plentiful and easy to find.

In any case, I had no trouble finding a new flash hider for my Franken10 just last night. I found it in stock at both Brownells and MidwayUSA.

In my research of ar-10 types, I have come to conclude a few things.
1) DPMS makes less than ideal AR-15s so a full DPMS build may be a bit sloppy
2) the DPSM ar-10 format is most widely accepted by after market part manufactures, and uses a good deal of mil spec AR-15 parts (go DPMS in this regard!).
3) I should go the DPMS 308 format route, but use select matching parts (barrel - BCG) (stripped lower - Stripped upper)

My build plan is:
18" SASS barrel by DPMS
DPMS BCg
Fulton Armory Upper and lower
RRA two stage trigger
PRS stock
DD 7.62 Lite rail

I ordered my barrel before it went out or stock, but have noticed other DPMS format parts are leaving the market due to high interest. It is not so much the after market accessories that have a run on them as it is the main building block parts. Anywho, perhaps this is how AR 10 parts go. I am new to the whole scene. I've notced Rock River seems to be running dry in their AR-15 department, though.

I owned a RRA LAR8 for quite a while, and yes they do take FAL mags. The only rifle that has that mag release and mag combo. The armalites take a specific mag and the DPMS rifles take a separate mag. I know Magpul is making a .308 mag now too and I have no idea which rifle is fits

I tend to agree with the statement that the DPMS .308 rifles leave a little to be desired in the fit and finish department. Not to say they are not good shooting b/c I have no trigger time behind one, just handling them in stores.

If I were spending AR-10 money I would look at a LaRue or LWRC

Magpul P-Mags work on SR-25 pattern rifles; Knights Armament, DPMS, LaRue, LWRC, etc., will NOT work on AR-10B, Noveske N6 or RRA LAR-8.

I think the Ar-15 guns are really easy to purchase, SO most of the people prefer to buy ar-15. Its legal flexibility is also major reason for its usage. Well, I am collecting the best ar 15 manufacturers. Please share some ar 15 manufacturers.
